Cet article se propose de dresser un aperçu de vingt-cinq années de recherches menées dans le domaine du marketing et des enfants, au travers des 6 rubriques suivantes: le développement cognitif des enfants, leurs aptitudes à traiter l'information, les facteurs d'influence sur la socialisation, l'influence des enfants dans les achats des parents, les enfants et la publicité, les enfants et l'univers de la distribution. Aucun modèle général de comportement de l'enfant-consommateur n'ayant jusqu'ici encore vu le jour (sans doute en raison du nombre considérable de fondements théoriques sur lesquels se sont appuyées l'ensemble des recherches effectuées), un recensement tel que celui-ci, aussi imparfait fût-il, apparaissait comme un préalable nécessaire. Chaque fois que cela s'avérait raisonnable, nous nous sommes efforcé d'avoir l'approche la plus complète possible (ex.: travaux sur les stratégies pour réduire les déficits naturels des enfants en matière de traitement d'information), mais lorsque la chose s'avérait irréaliste, nous avons dû, afin de donner l'éclairage le plus large possible dans les contraintes de format qu'impose un article, opérer des choix, sans doute discutables pour certains d'entre eux. Nous avons pour cela retenu 3 clefs: les auteurs faisant le plus unanimement autorité sur un sujet (ex.: Piaget pour le développement cognitif ou Kapferer pour la publicité), les auteurs ayant exploré une problématique originale de nature à faire avancer le niveau des connaissances (ex.: Derbaix et la hiérarchie de l'implication maximale), les auteurs ayant développé une réflexion à la suite d'une synthèse qu'ils avaient réalisée (ex.: Banks sur le comportement face à la télévision).
L'objet de cet article est double: — Montrer que même si leurs actes sont encore fortement imprégnés de relents affectifs, les enfants sont aptes, dès l'âge de 7 ans, à choisir un produit sur une base multi-attributs, et ce de façon tout à fait cohérente. — Dégager à partir des trois attributs «marque, prix et prime (quantité ou cadeau offert)», le système de valeurs autour duquel s'articule le choix des enfants de 7 à 12 ans (filles et garçons) lors de diverses situations d'achat plus ou moins contraignantes pour eux, et portant sur des produits à plus ou moins forte valeur affective. Nous avons pour cela utilisé les mesures conjointes en procédant à une collecte des données en pair-wise; cette méthode, malgré les aptitudes cognitives requises, s'est avérée un franc succès et confirme le fait, s'il en était besoin, qu'il est tout à fait possible, en prenant un minimum de précautions expérimentales, d'explorer le domaine des attitudes et des comportements des enfants, au même titre que celui des consommateurs adultes.
