This article studies the effects of arsine on the synthesis and thermal degradation of 4 samples of virgin polypropylene (PP-virgin) and proposes reaction mechanisms that allow understanding of its behaviour. Different points are monitored during the polypropylene synthesis to perform TGA, DSC, FT-IR, RDX, and MFI analyses later. The content of AsH3 in polypropylene varies between 0.05 and 4.73 ppm, and of arsenic in virgin PP residues between 0.001 and 4.32 ppm for PP0 and PP10, increasing in fluidity index from 3.0 to 24.51. The origin of thermo-oxidative degradation is explained by the reaction mechanisms of the Molecule AsH3 with the active titanium center of the ZN catalyst and the subsequent oxidation to form radical complexes. OO-AsH-TiCl4-MgCl2 and (OO-as-OO)2 -TiCl4-MgCl2, which, by radical reactions, give rise to the formation of functional groups aldehyde, ketone, alcohol, carboxylic acid, CO, CO2, PP-Polyol, PP-Polyether, and PP-Isopropylethers. These species caused the TG and DTG curves to increase degradation peaks in pp samples.
Natural antioxidants are added in very low amounts to protect a polypropylene (PP) matrix against thermo‐oxidative degradation during processing. Thus, PP is melt‐blended with caffeic, chlorogenic, trans‐ferrulic, and p‐coumaric acids, and also with flavone and 3‐hydroxyflavone at 0.1 wt% with respect to the PP matrix. Neat PP and PP blended with three traditional antioxidants are prepared for comparison. A complete structural, thermal, and mechanical characterization is conducted. Ferrulic acid and particularly caffeic acid increases the thermal stability, showing also the highest activation energy. The structural changes of PP‐based films due to the polymer thermal degradation at high temperature (i.e., 400 °C) followed by FTIR reveal that antioxidants effectively delay the thermal degradation process. The wettability and the mechanical performance are also studied to get information regarding the industrial application of such films. While caffeic acid provides a more flexible material, ferrulic acid provides higher water resistance. Finally, AFM‐QNM shows that PP with caffeic acid has the highest miscibility.
Completely biobased and biodegradable thermoplastic starch (TPS) based materials with a tunable performance were prepared for food packaging applications. Five blends were prepared by blending TPS with 10 wt%. of different pine resins derivatives: gum rosin (GR), disproportionated gum rosin (RD), maleic anhydride-modified gum rosin (CM), pentaerythritol ester of gum rosin (LF), and glycerol ester of gum rosin (UG). The materials were characterized in terms of thermo-mechanical behavior, surface wettability, color performance, water absorption, X-ray diffraction pattern, and disintegration under composting conditions. It was determined that pine resin derivatives increase the hydrophobicity of TPS and also increase the elastic component of TPS which stiffen the TPS structure. The water uptake study revealed that GR and LF were able to decrease the water absorption of TPS, while the rest of the resins kept the water uptake ability. X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that GR, CM, and RD restrain the aging of TPS after 24 months of aging. Finally, all TPS-resin blends were disintegrated under composting conditions during the thermophilic incubation period (90 days). Because of the TPS-resin blend’s performance, the prepared materials are suitable for biodegradable rigid food packaging applications.
During the production of polymer-grade propylene, different processes are used to purify this compound and ensure that it is of the highest quality. However, some impurities such as acetylene and methyl acetylene are difficult to remove, and some of these impurities may be present in the propylene used to obtain polypropylene, which may have repercussions on the process. This study evaluates the impact of these acetylene and methyl acetylene impurities on the productivity of the polypropylene synthesis process and on the mechanical and thermal properties of the material obtained through the synthesis of eight samples with different concentrations of acetylene and eight samples with different concentrations of acetylene. We discovered that for the first concentrations of both acetylene (2 and 3 ppm) and methyl acetylene (0.03 and 0.1), the MFI, thermal recording, and mechanical properties of the resin were unaffected by the variation of the fluidity index, thermal degradation by TGA, and mechanical properties such as resistance to tension, bending, and impact. However, when the concentration exceeded 14 ppm for methyl acetylene and 12 ppm for acetylene, the resistance of this resin began to decrease linearly. Regarding production, this was affected by the first traces of acetylene and methyl acetylene progressively decreasing.
