Motion perception is essential to adapt behavior in a dynamic environment. Many studies have suggested that looming motion captures attention, whereas receding motion does not, highlighting the behavioral urgency of motion perception. The present study examined whether attentional resources can be attracted by a specific directed flow in the presence of multiple flows that are simultaneously displayed in the visual field. The results showed that when two flows of opposite direction (looming and receding) are displayed together, participants more efficiently discriminate the target inside the looming motion. When four flows are presented (one looming and three receding or three looming and one receding), the results showed that the target displayed inside the looming flow was more rapidly identified but also suggest that attention can be attracted by receding motion. This suggests that the process inside a looming flow is more efficient, but this effect could not be attributed to attentional focusing processes.
Palavras-chave: atenção visual; modelos da atenção visual; psicologia cognitiva AbstractVisual attention: behavioral studies about location-based and object-based selection. The study of visual attention has become an important topic in cognitive psychology research in the last 30 years. However, many questions about the nature of attention are not well understood. The efforts to understand this cognitive architecture are centered in two great theoretical models on the visual attention: the first model supports that visual attention is allocated on visual space (location-based visual attention) while a second model supports that attention could select the objects representations per se (object-based visual attention). In this review, we pooled important researches about these two seminal models and some questions concerning the human visual attention were examined.
Toxoplasmosis is caused by Toxoplasma gondii that affects almost all warm-blooded animals. In Brazil, there is high rates of T. gondii infection in humans and the latent infection has been related to a series of sensory/neurological conditions. The present study evaluated the relation between seropositivity to T. gondii and behavioral performance of psychomotor and attentional tasks in asymptomatic young adults. Three computerized behavioral tests, Simple Reaction Time Task (SRTT), Spatial Cueing Task (SCT), and Attentional Load Task (ALT) were performed to evaluate their cognitive/psychomotor performance. The SRTT results suggest a significant increase in reaction time performance associated with T. gondii seropositivity and support the association of asymptomatic infection with a decrease in psychomotor performance. In general, the performance of the seronegative (n = 30) and the seropositive (n = 30) groups did not differ qualitatively in SCT, but reaction times were systematically slower in the positive group compared to the negative one. In ALT, both groups did not differ significantly in their selection of relevant information under high load conditions. However, it was possible to confirm a higher influence of flanker letter compatibility when evaluating the performance of the seropositive group under low load conditions, after post hoc analysis. Overall, these results suggest that young male adults presenting latent T. gondii infection may present significant impairment of the motor response time to a simple visual stimulus, as well as attentional selection on perceptual low load demand, but do not present a significant impact on bottom-up allocation of visual attention and high load attention selection.

Palavras-chave: atenção, resposta inibitória, desenvolvimento cognitivo, tarefa agir/não agir Attention and Inhibitory Behavior in Children of 6 to 8 Year-olds ABSTRACT -Considerable evidence suggests that attention and inhibitory behavior show differences along specific developmental stages. The present study aimed to evaluate the attention and inhibitory control of 130 children, aged six to eight years, in a go/no-go task adapted for this age group. The results suggest that 6-year-old children had significantly higher reaction times and made more errors when compared to 8-year-old children. These findings corroborate studies that indicate important differences in information processing in the age group studied, especially with regard to the attentional control capacity, related to inattentive behaviors when a goal is proposed, and the inhibitory control capacity, related to impulse response behaviors.
We found indicators of inattention and impulsivity to be associated with T1DM, with inattention being closely related with hyperglycemia, and impulsivity being associated with hypoglycemia. Further research is needed to study diabetes-associated cognitive decline with more objective parameters, and to analyse the reliability and psychometric properties of the tasks proposed in this study.
