Významný anglikánský teolog, zakladatel a hlavní představitel tzv. radikální ortodoxie John Milbank si všiml toho, že u křesťanských myslitelů, kteří se pokoušejí hlouběji přemýšlet o politice, existuje důraz na podobné myšlenky.1 Milbank proto oponuje obecně rozšířenému názo-ru, podle něhož jsou křesťané politicky rozděleni stejně jako ostatní občané. To může podle jeho názoru platit jen pro ty křesťany, kteří uvažují o politice povrchně a bez spojitosti se svou vírou. Pro křesťanské myslitele bylo vždy typické vymezování se vůči modernímu suverénnímu státu a suverénnímu individuu. Intelektuální kořeny státu i individua jsou spjaty s pochybnou voluntaristickou teologií, 2 která je podhoubím jak etatismu, tak ultra -liberalismu, a proto vždy byli křesťanští myslitelé nuceni k hledání nějaké třetí cesty mezi těmito dvěma reduktivními pří-stupy, které pomíjejí význam lidských vztahů a sdružení. Náboženská sdružení jsou přitom prvotnější než suverénní stát a volný trh. Rodí se v nich specifické ctnostné praktiky a mravy, které podle Milbanka ukazují, že zásadní odlišnost křesťanství nespočívá na úrovni abstraktních principů. Přes politickou dominanci etatismu a ultra -liberalismu se v ná-vaznosti na Milbankovo dílo zrodily v posledních letech v Anglii dvě významné ideologické alternativy, jež se rozsáhle inspirují křesťanským myšlením.Zatímco na pravici se objevil tzv. rudý toryismus (Red Tory), na levici se vyskytli tzv. modří labouristé (Blue Labour).3 Byl -li Phillip Blond * Článek vznikl v rámci grantu "Liberální demokracie v době krize" (GA16 -13980S).
Známý francouzský katolický politický filosof Pierre Manent vzbudil v nedávné době velkou pozornost svým zamyšlením o stavu současné francouzské společnosti. Nejen Francie, ale mnohé další evropské státy se musí vyrovnávat s výzvou přítomnosti islámu na svém území. Manent si v tomto kontextu všiml toho, že navzdory bohatství materiálních a intelektuálních zdrojů se Francie stala politicky nesmírně slabou. Příčinu tohoto paradoxu je možno stopovat k událostem roku 1968, které Manent pojímá jako "politické vítězství v zásadě apolitického hnutí". 1 Ačkoliv se hnutí roku 1968 jeví jako velice "politické", ba dokonce "revoluční", právě ono způsobilo úpadek politické loajality ke společnosti. S tím je spojena proměna typu člověka charakteristického pro současné demokracie: angažovaného občana nahrazuje individuum vyhledávající různá (soukromá) potěšení. 2 Každé omezení jeho přání a tužeb se zdá arbitrární, a proto mu musí být umožněno přezkoumat veškeré vztahy, co má, tj. měla by mu být garantována permanentní svoboda zlomit jakákoliv pouta, jež vnímá jako omezující. 3 Úkolem vlády se v tomto politickém režimu stává poskytování různých práv jednotlivcům a skupinám. Dochází přitom k pohlcení práv občana právy člověka, s čímž je právě spojeno vytvoření oné nové postavy "občana-individua", který by se měl především "uvolnit" a "nebrat veřejné věci moc vážně". 4 To činí slabou společnost i vládu.
