The MetS is highly prevalent in elderly people in Beijing, particularly among women. Individuals with MetS defined by either criteria are at significantly elevated ORs for CHD, stroke, and PAD. The IDF criteria seem to be better suited than the NCEP criteria for screening and estimating risk of MetS in Chinese people.
PAD is common in elderly Chinese and the prevalence is higher in women than in men. About 40% of PAD patients were asymptomatic and unaware of their condition. Cigarette smoking is a major risk factor for PAD, and smoking cessation substantially reduces the risk.
Modification
of the paraffin crystallization and flow ability of
waxy crude oil is of vital importance during transportation and restart
processes at low temperature. To investigate the influence of pendants
in comb-type copolymers on the cold flow ability of crude oil, maleic
anhydride-α-octadecene copolymer and its derivatives with octadecyl
(MAC), phenyl (AMAC), or naphthalene (NMAC) pendants were synthesized.
These derivatives, when added to waxy crude oil, change the size and
quantity of the paraffin crystals observed by polarizing light microscopy
(PLM), improve the flow ability of waxy oils by reducing the viscosity
and yield stress revealed by rheometer, and decrease the paraffin
crystallization temperature and quantity of wax precipitation determined
by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). AMAC had the greatest
effect followed by MAC and NMAC, respectively. It seems that small
aromatic pendants improve the flow ability of waxy oils by adsorbing
on the surface of asphaltenes, while large aromatic pendants impair
the assembly of copolymers with asphaltenes by a higher steric hindrance.
Low temperature induces diapause in locusts. However, the physiological processes and initiation mechanism of diapause are not well understood. To understand the molecular basis of diapause, ‘omics’ analyses were performed to examine the differences between diapause and non-diapause eggs at both transcriptional and translational levels. Results indicated that a total of 62,241 mRNAs and 212 proteins were differentially expressed. Among them, 116 transcripts had concurrent transcription and translation profiles. Up-regulated genes related to diapause included glutathiones-S-transferase et al., and down-regulated genes including juvenile hormone esterase-like protein et al. KEGG analysis mapped 7,243 and 99 differentially expressed genes and proteins, to 83 and 25 pathways, respectively. Correlation enriched pathways indicated that there were nine identical pathways related to diapause. Gene Ontology analysis placed these genes and proteins into three categories, and a higher proportion of genes related to metabolism was up-regulated than down-regulated. Furthermore, three up-regulated pathways were linked to cryoprotection. This study demonstrates the applicability of high-throughput omics tools to identify molecules linked to diapause in the locust. In addition, it reveals cellular metabolism in diapause eggs is more active than in non-diapause eggs, and up-regulated enzymes may play roles in cryoprotection and storing energy for diapause and post-diapause stages.
BackgroundHepatitis B e Antigen (HBeAg)-negative chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients have an active liver disease with a high risk of progression to decompensated cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The management strategy for HBeAg-negative CHB patients treated with nucleos(t)ide analogues (NUCs) is a topic of concern. To observe the outcomes for this population after NUCs withdrawal, HBeAg-negative CHB patients with loss of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) or sustained undetectable HBV DNA levels who had discontinued NUCs therapy were included in the study.MethodsA total of 66 patients (2 patients with HBsAg loss and 64 patients with sustained undetectable HBV DNA levels) were examined. HBV DNA levels and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels were monitored regularly after discontinuation of NUCs therapy. Relapse was defined as HBV DNA levels >2,000 IU/mL while off therapy in at least two determinations more than 4 weeks apart.ResultsThe time to achieve undetectable HBV DNA levels was 14 weeks (interquartile range (IQR): 12–24 weeks). The time until consolidation therapy was 144 weeks (IQR: 96–168 weeks). No relapses occurred in either of the HBsAg loss patients. Among the 64 patients with undetectable HBV DNA levels, 19 (29.7%) patients demonstrated evidence of relapse. All the relapses occurred within 96 weeks after discontinuation. The median duration of relapse was 36 weeks (IQR: 12–48 weeks). Elevation of HBV DNA and ALT levels over baseline was only observed in 10% of the relapse patients. There were no significant differences among the baseline characteristics (sex, HBV genotype, age, or ALT level) or the time until consolidation therapy between relapse and sustained-response patients.ConclusionsNUC discontinuation is feasible after achieving undetectable HBV DNA levels in HBeAg-negative CHB patients. Prolonging the time until consolidation therapy may be a good strategy to decrease the rate of relapse. More than 96 weeks of sustained response is a predictive marker of long-term sustained response.
This paper presents a functional nanoparticle-enhanced enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (FNP-ELISA) for detection of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O157:H7. Immunomagnetic nanoparticles (IMMPs) conjugated with monoclonal anti-O157:H7 antibody were used to capture E. coli O157:H7. Beacon gold nanoparticles (B-GNPs) coated with polyclonal anti-O157:H7 and biotin single-stranded DNA (B-DNA) were then subjective to immunoreaction with E. coli O157:H7, which was followed by streptavidin-horseradish peroxidase (Strep-HRP) conjugated with B-GNPs based on a biotin-avidin system. The solutions containing E. coli O157:H7, IMMPs, B-GNPs, and Strep-HRP were collected for detecting color change. The signal was significantly amplified with detection limits of 68 CFU mL-1 in PBS and 6.8 × 102 to 6.8 × 103 CFU mL-1 in the food samples. The FNP-ELISA method developed in this study was two orders of magnitude more sensitive than immunomagnetic separation ELISA (IMS-ELISA) and four orders of magnitude more sensitive than C-ELISA. The entire detection process of E. coli O157:H7 lasted only 3 h, and thus FNP-ELISA is considered as a time-saving method.
