Prevalence of peripheral arterial disease and its association with smoking in a population-based study in Beijing, China

Abstract: PAD is common in elderly Chinese and the prevalence is higher in women than in men. About 40% of PAD patients were asymptomatic and unaware of their condition. Cigarette smoking is a major risk factor for PAD, and smoking cessation substantially reduces the risk.

“…This is in accordance with the fact that myocardial infarction is found less frequently in Japan than in other countries and indicates that atherosclerosis is less prevalent in Japan. Smoking has been reported to be one of the most important risk factors for PAD and atherosclerosis 11) , however, our current smoking percentage (11.5%) was lower than that of other studies (15.1 − 35.8%) [7][8][9][10][11] , which may have influenced the low prevalence of PAD found in this study.…”

“…Literature reveals no consistent evidence to support differences in the prevalence of PAD between the sexes. Some studies have found a significant difference in the prevalence between males and females [18], while others have not [19]. This study showed positive association between PAD and diabetes.…”
