Necrotic enteritis is an enteric disease of poultry resulting from infection by Clostridium perfringens with coinfection by Eimeria spp. constituting a major risk factor for disease pathogenesis. This study compared three commercial broiler chicken lines using an experimental model of necrotic enteritis. Day-old male Cobb, Ross, and Hubbard broilers were orally infected with viable C. perfringens and E. maxima and fed a high-protein diet to promote the development of experimental disease. Body weight loss, intestinal lesions, and serum antibody levels against alpha-toxin and necrotic enteritis B-like (NetB) toxin were measured as parameters of disease susceptibility and host immune response. Cobb chickens exhibited increased body weight loss compared with Ross and Hubbard breeds and greater gut lesion severity compared with Ross chickens. NetB antibody levels were greater in Cobb chickens compared with the Ross or Hubbard groups. These results suggest that Cobb chickens may be more susceptible to necrotic enteritis in the field compared with the Ross and Hubbard lines.
On December 3, 2014, a type O foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak began in Korea. Although vaccinations were administered, FMD cases increased steadily for five months, and reached 185 cases by April 2015. Most of the affected animals were pigs, which are vulnerable to vaccination. The FMD virus belonged to the South-East Asia (SEA) topotype that had been observed three times in Korea between April 2010 and July 2014. However, the FMD virus isolated in December 2014 had a unique feature; that is, partial deletion of the 5′ non-coding region, a deletion not seen in previous SEA topotype isolates identified in Korea. We conclude that this outbreak included the introduction of a new FMD strain to Korea, and that Korea was now affected by genetically similar FMD virus strains that are related to those from neighboring countries.
Despite nation-wide immunization with O, A, and Asia 1 type vaccines in Republic of Korea, foot-and-mouth disease type O occurred again in July 2014 after three years and three months. This virus was a Mya-98 strain of the Southeast Asian topotype and was most similar to the identified type that circulated in East Asia in 2014. This was new virus with the deletion of 23 amino acids in 3A/3B1 region and low pathogenic property.
Trivalent inactivated poliovirus vaccine (lPV) (MK) was made, purified, and inactivated according to the amended Rijks Instituut (The Netherlands) protocol from primary monkey kidney tissue grown on microcarrier cultures. Losses of the type 2 component due to adsorption to the glass ampule occurred with the purified vaccine preparation. This problem was solved by changing the diluent, and the vaccine was submitted for evaluation in clinical trials at Johns Hopkins (Baltimore, Md.). Phase 2 of the development was to standardize production of IPV from MRC-5 (human diploid) cells on microcarriers and otherwise follow the Rijks Instituut's method. Results of experimental trivalent vaccine production and testing showed that the number of effective doses harvested from MRC-5 cell cultures compared favorably with vaccine derived from monkey kidney. The yields could be further increased with stearyl tyrosine as adjuvant. Large-scale production using 200-liter fermenters is in progress. Poliovirus particles of various densities in cesium chloride can be found in any IPV preparation and give rise to different immunogenic responses. As shown in this paper, some of these virus fractions produce a low primary humoral antibody response but appear to be important for memory induction.
A new 1D oxalato bridged compound Ni(en)(ox)․2H2O, (ox = oxalate; en = ethylenediamine) has been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectrum, TG analysis, and magnetic measurements. In the structure the Ni atoms are coordinated with four oxygen atoms in two oxalate ions and two nitrogen atoms in one ethylenediamine molecule. The oxalate anion acts as a bis-bidentate ligand bridging Ni atoms in cis-configuration. This completes the infinite zigzag neutral chain, [Ni(en)(ox)]. The interchain space is filled by water molecules that link the chains through a network of hydrogen bonds. Thermal variance of the magnetic susceptibility shows a broad maximum around 50 K characteristic of one-dimensional antiferromagnetic coupling. The theoretical fit of the data for T > 20 K led to the nearest neighbor spin interaction J = -43 K and g = 2.25. The rapid decrease in susceptibility below 20 K indicate this compound to be a likely Haldane gap candidate material with S = 1.
The purpose of this study was to explore factors that affect the compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue of child and adolescent' workers, For this, the structural equation model was to construct a resilience, communication skills, supervision of child adolescent' workers based on compassion satisfaction-compassion fatigue(CS-CF) model. To accomplish the study aim, a survey using a structured questionnaire was conducted with 223 child adolescent' workers. The data was analyzed using structural equation modeling. The modified hypothetical model yielded the following: First, 2=279.039, df=93, CFI=.902, RMSEA=.095 and showed good fit indices. Second, a resilience, communication skills, supervision showed direct effects on compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue. Results of this study suggest that it is important to develop a support program for child adolescent' workers in order to improve their compassion satisfaction and ameliorate their compassion fatigue. Also, this study supports the importance of compassion fatigue as a risk factor for social workers counseling traumatized clients and its association with psychological problems.
