Novel foot-and-mouth disease virus in Korea, July-August 2014

Abstract: Despite nation-wide immunization with O, A, and Asia 1 type vaccines in Republic of Korea, foot-and-mouth disease type O occurred again in July 2014 after three years and three months. This virus was a Mya-98 strain of the Southeast Asian topotype and was most similar to the identified type that circulated in East Asia in 2014. This was new virus with the deletion of 23 amino acids in 3A/3B1 region and low pathogenic property.

“…The predominant SEA topotype strain, O/SEA/Mya-98 was mainly restricted to SEA countries until 2010 ( Table 2 ). In 2010–2011 this strain caused devastating outbreaks in FMD free countries, Japan and South Korea [3] , [9] , [10] , [11] , [12] , [13] resulting in high economic losses. O Manisa vaccine was used to control the disease, however full clinical protection was not observed in South Korea.…”

“…Following a large-scale occurrence of FMD in November 2010, all farm animals susceptible to FMD were vaccinated in Korea [ 11 ]. Occurrence of the disease then appeared to end, but FMD recurred in July, August, and December of 2014, and again from January to March in 2016 [ 12 ]. From 2000 onwards, both type A and type O FMDVs have occurred in Korea.…”

“…After large-scale type O FMD outbreaks resulted in 153 cases from November 2010 to April 2011, Korea began nationwide administration of vaccinations against the O, A, and Asia1 types of FMDV [ 10 ]. With the continuous occurrence of FMD in neighboring countries such as China, Vietnam, and North Korea, FMD occurred twice in Korea between 2000 and 2002 and five times between 2010 and 2014 [ 8 9 10 11 ]. This was unexpected due to Korea's strong vaccination policies; regardless, the country experienced two more FMD outbreaks after beginning nationwide vaccinations.…”
