Les sciences de l'information viennent de passer un cap. Elles s'étaient construites sur un ordre documentaire relativement stable durant le XXème siècle. Même s'il subissait une explosion quantitative, même s'il intégrait de nouveaux supports comme l'audiovisuel, sa structure générale suivait des règles et canaux qui étaient repérés. Les sciences de l'information pouvaient alors se construire sur un corpus de documents soumis à des contraintes connues et proposer des méthodes et des outils pour en tirer l'information utile comme le classement, l'indexation, des équations de recherche de plus en plus raffinées, la scientométrie, etc. pour les traditions issues de la bibliothéconomie, et d'autres encore, comme l'évaluation, l'élimination, le calendrier de conservation de son autre racine professionnelle, plus méconnue en France : l'archivistique. L'informatique était dans cette perspective un outil de plus, sans doute révolutionnaire par sa puissance, mais qui ne remettait pas en cause les fondements du raisonnement.Pour ma part, j'avais montré que les sciences de l'information se distinguaient des sciences de la communication par la perspective prise : celle de la recherche et de l'accès, c'est-à-dire la perspective de l'usager et non celle de la création et de la diffusion, perspectives du producteur propres aux sciences de la communication (Salaün, 1993). Yves Le Coadic (1994), de son côté, pouvait alors légitimement proposer d'enlever un «s» à sciences, parlant de «la science de l'information» au singulier, même si elle faisait appel, en particulier pour former aux professions afférentes, à d'autres disciplines, comme l'histoire, la gestion, la sociologie ou le droit.Dans cet article, construit comme une rapide proposition, je m'efforcerai de montrer que cette période est derrière nous et qu'il faut, de nouveau au XXIème siècle, s'exprimer au pluriel. Le numérique transforme, en effet, le coeur même du raisonnement, l'objet sur lequel était basé la construction de la dite science de l'information, même s'il lui était arrivé de l'oublier : le document. Et dès lors, l'ordre documentaire est remis en cause. Il ne faut pas s'en plaindre, c'est une période nouvelle passionnante qui s'est ouverte, un défi pour les chercheurs du domaine, pour peu qu'ils acceptent de ne pas rester enfermés dans leurs anciennes chapelles.La proposition sera bâtie en trois temps. Tout d'abord, je m'efforcerai de replacer rapidement la bascule en cours dans son évolution historique. Puis, je présenterai la notion de «redocumentarisation», en m'appuyant très largement sur les réflexions menées
Même si elles trouvent leurs racines dans des traditions professionnelles anciennes, les « sciences de l'information » se sont affirmées dans les deux dernières décennies sur la base de politiques publiques dans l'information scientifique et technique et de l'arrivée des nouvelles technologies de traitement de l'information. La réflexion conceptuelle n'a pas accompagné le développement des outils. L'analyse des médiations construites à partir de l'activité de lecture, donc du destinataire, devrait autoriser une nouvelle avancée de ces sciences qui intégrerait les apports de l'histoire du livre, de l'économie de l'information ou de l'informatique documentaire.
Version du 17-02-2004 Communication et Langages n°140 Juin 2004 Chapô : Cet article présente un travail collectif de réflexion sur le document dans sa bascule vers le numérique mené au sein d'un réseau de chercheurs du département Sciences et technologies de l'information de la communication du CNRS. La rédaction collective d'un texte, menée notamment grâce à un dispositif d'annotations, a conduit à un inventaire analytique des recherches en cours. Celui-ci comprend trois entrées : la forme, le texte et le medium qui font ressortir les traits saillants de l'évolution en cours et les questions encore en suspens. En particulier, la construction de plus en plus courante de documents à la volée transforme radicalement leur stabilité traditionnelle. L'avancement de la réflexion collective pourrait déboucher sur l'élaboration d'une théorie du document.
Ce chapitre présente successivement les professions et les institutions de l'information. Les unes et les autres ont des origines très anciennes et une organisation façonnée progressivement par l'histoire, mais elles sont en même temps soumises à des transformations et à des ouvertures importantes et très récentes. Riche d'une solide tradition, et conscient des défis posés par la modernité la plus radicale, le professionnel de l'information a une place privilégiée dans nos sociétés. La première partie tracera les contours des différentes familles professionnelles, bibliothécaires, archivistes, documentalistes, montrant leurs origines et vocations diverses, soulignant les différences des découpages identitaires des deux côtés de l'Atlantique ainsi que les formations. On verra aussi que, du fait du numérique, les clivages traditionnels sont aujourd'hui estompés, par un effacement relatif des frontières d'une part et un éclatement des spécialités de l'autre.
