Este trabalho descreve a experiência de um projeto extensionista desenvolvido de forma itinerante em instituições públicas municipais de educação, onde serão apresentadas as principais contribuições para a popularização de conhecimentos sobre solos da região Amazônica. Tendo por objetivo geral fortalecer os conhecimentos sobre os solos da região Amazônica, sensibilizando alunos e comunidade sobre a importância do uso e ocupação sustentável do solo. As ações foram desenvolvidas com estudantes do ensino fundamental, e consistiram na realização de leituras e produção textual; jogos, desenhos e atividades lúdicas; utilização de recursos tecnológicos no laboratório de informática; aulas em áreas verdes das escolas e socialização das aprendizagens construídas. De maneira geral, os resultados indicam que o projeto contribuiu para difundir conhecimentos científicos básicos sobre solos, possibilitando aos estudantes reconhecer a importância de sua conservação.
Dada a importância do solo para a subsistência humana e a vida no planeta, urge a necessidade de que essa temática seja tratada no ensino de ciências naturais de maneira ampla e significativa de modo a gerar mudança de atitudes e a apropriação de um forte senso de responsabilidade em relação a sua sustentabilidade. Neste contexto, o trabalho se caracteriza como uma pesquisa-ação de caráter qualitativo. A coleta de dados consistiu na realização de uma entrevista semiestruturada ao final do processo de ensino-aprendizagem com o objetivo de conhecer a percepção dos alunos de duas turmas de 6º ano da Zona Rural de Manaus sobre o que seria necessário para que na relação homem-natureza, possamos desenvolver o uso sustentável do solo. Os conteúdos de solo foram abordados por meio de aulas teóricas com explanação dialogada com uso de slides contendo imagens como charges e pinturas relacionadas aos assuntos trabalhados, vídeos didáticos, atividades práticas e estudo in loco do solo por meio de aulas de campo. Os resultados enfatizam que na percepção dos alunos, a sustentabilidade do solo requer conscientização e sensibilização, tendo a escola um importante papel para alcançar esse objetivo. Além disso, há a percepção de que sem a intervenção do poder público, processos de degradação continuarão a ocorrer. Os relatos das respostas subjetivas permitem inferir que a intervenção propiciou a ampliação dos conhecimentos sobre solo e uma maior valorização do assunto por parte dos sujeitos da pesquisa.
