Assessment should be an integral facet of all of our teaching, and the same is true of developing and integrating alternate assessments for students with severe disabilities into ongoing classroom routines. Though the specific requirements for alternate assessments vary from state to state, many states are developing performance-based alternate assessments that represent a collection of the student's best work (National Center on Educational Outcomes, 2000).
