ABSTRACT:The goal of this study was to develop a fuzzy model to predict the occupancy rate of free-stalls facilities of dairy cattle, aiding to optimize the design of projects. The following input variables were defined for the development of the fuzzy system: dry bulb temperature (T db , °C), wet bulb temperature (T wb , °C) and black globe temperature (T bg , °C). Based on the input variables, the fuzzy system predicts the occupancy rate (OR, %) of dairy cattle in free-stall barns. For the model validation, data collecting were conducted on the facilities of the Intensive System of Milk Production (SIPL), in the Dairy Cattle National Research Center (CNPGL) of Embrapa. The OR values, estimated by the fuzzy system, presented values of average standard deviation of 3.93%, indicating low rate of errors in the simulation. Simulated and measured results were statistically equal (P>0.05, t Test). After validating the proposed model, the average percentage of correct answers for the simulated data was 89.7%. Therefore, the fuzzy system developed for the occupancy rate prediction of free-stalls facilities for dairy cattle allowed a realistic prediction of stalls occupancy rate, allowing the planning and design of free-stall barns. USE OF SLATE TO BUILT SWINE NURSERY CELLS: II -THERMAL ENVIRONMENT AND NOISE EVALUATION ABSTRACT:The aim of the present study was to evaluate the thermal environment and noise levels in swine farrowing cells built with masonry or slate. Thermometers and sound level meter equipment were used to measure the thermal comfort variables. Inside the cells and for the statistical analysis, twelve sows and one hundred thirty-nine piglets were used, distributed in a randomized blocks design in a split-plot arrangement. The results showed that in the morning, in both treatments, the thermal comfort conditions were more suitable for sows, while in the afternoon it was more suitable for piglets. The noise was lower in the masonry cells. Overall, the environment inside in the cells built with slate presented lower relative humidity and, higher BGHI and temperature than those built with masonry. The noise level remained within the thresholds considered as ideal for swine in both treatments.
O método de Agrupamento Hierárquico Aglomerativo mostrou-se uma ferramenta eficaz na avaliação comportamental na área de produção animal.PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Agrupamento hierárquico aglomerativo, avaliação comportamental, coturnicultura JAPANESE LAYING QUAILS BEHAVIOR UNDER DIFFERENT TEMPERATURES ABSTRACT: The quail production has grown considerably in recent years in Brazil, from being a subsistence activity and becoming a technological and profitable activity. Despite the growth, farmers still encounter barriers that make it difficult to maximize production. Among the barriers it can be mentioned, the environment production, which exerts a direct influence on the quails behavior, that can be used to evaluate their well-being. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the behavior of Japanese laying quails submitted to different air dry-bulb temperatures by the clustering method. The quails were subjected to temperatures of 20°C, 22°C, 24°C, 26°C, 28°C 30°C, and 32°C. The assessed behaviors were: presence in the feeder, presence in the drinker, behavior characterizing stress, they were pecking, riding on other quail, repeated movements with the head and running inside the cage, and idle behavior, in which quails remained standing. The results were evaluated by the clustering method and cophenetic correlation coefficient. At 20°C, quails presented more distinct behavior among the evaluated temperatures. The frequency of occurrence of stress behaviors and presence at the drinker were similar. The higher frequency of occurrence of stress behavior was in lower temperatures. The leisure behavior was the highest frequency at all air temperatures when compared to other behaviors. The cophenetic correlation coefficient for behaviors within the grouped temperatures was 0.85 and the temperature within the isolated behaviors was 0.96. The thermal comfort interval, based on behavioral analysis of Japanese laying quails, was from 22 ° C to 24 ° C. Japanese quails presented reactions consistent with thermal stress at 20 ° C. The clustering method showed to be an effective tool in the behavioral evaluation in the area of animal production.KEYWORDS: Clustering method, behavioral evaluation, quail production.
Animal welfare is conditional on well-planned and well-managed exploitation, since the management of the animals strongly influences their behavior, their productivity and, consequently, the yield and quality of the final product. In this study, an investigative review was carried out of the literature, governmental databases and main institutions relating to animal welfare, seeking to highlight and discuss differences in legislation between Brazil and Portugal, in view of the interest and concern of the scientific community and the consumer market in relation to methods used for animal production. In Brazil, there is no specific legislation on the welfare of pigs and other related legislation is used as a basis. However, Portugal has more specific legislation on the subject. Considering the dissemination of knowledge and the growing concern with animal welfare in the European consumer market, it is noted that the need for its application standards that ensure animal welfare in production/breeding, possibly becoming a basic requirement in the coming years. However, Brazilian pig farms, like all other animal production activities, are still lacking specific legislation that is appropriate for Brazil, which ends up delaying the effective practice of welfare in productions, abstaining from the population of information about the activity. New studies are needed to ascertain the necessity and applicability of the legislation, and whether the legislation is effective in improving animal welfare or serves only to increase bureaucracy.
