Znaczenie wyrażenia językowego jest podstawowym, ale zarazem niezwykle tajemniczym pojęciem filozofii języka. Celem tej pracy jest przedstawienie niektórych problemów, przed którymi stajemy, próbując wyjaśnić i uściślić to pojęcie, czyli próbując zbudować teorię znaczenia. Próby rozwiązania tych problemów prowadzą, zdaniem autora, do wyróżniania trzech możliwych typów teorii omówionych w tej publikacji.
Przedmiotem trzeciego rozdziału jest język logiki oraz dyskusja nad możliwością formułowania syntaktycznych kryteriów logiczności. Kryterium syntaktyczne może być rozumiane dwojako: 1. czy w języku logiki istnieją "pozycje" lub "miejsca" zarezerwowane dla znaków logicznych?; 2. czy język logiki może być dowolnie bogaty?
