No es absolutamente insensato afirmar que gran parte de la Lógica formal contemporánea ha pretendido (y pretende) tomar como punto de partida y criterio en el establecimiento de los cálculos de la Teoría de Términos la noción de clase, a la que corresponde isomórficamente la de «predicado». Las razones de esta decisión son complejas y, aparentemente, nada arbitrarias. Al conceder al término «clase» un carácter fundamental, parece que el método de construcción de cálculos lógicos se limita a estar de acuerdo con la dinámica propia de la experiencia usual, del sentido común, y, aún, de lo que se piensa que es la estructura misma del conocimiento humano. Clasificar sería una actividad mental previa a toda otra que va unida a la actitud de situar o localizar un elemento en un entorno 1 . Sin embargo, cabría la posibilidad de pensar que la clasificación de determinados elementos supone su constitución, es decir su patencia con contornos más o menos delimitados ante el clasificador 2 .
