Descreve a concepção e operação da biblioteca digital, desenvolvida pela Biblioteca Central em parceria com o Centro de Processamento de Dados, a Pró-Reitoria de Pesquisa e a Pró-Reitoria Adjunta de Pós-Graduação da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. Tem como objetivos preservar a memória institucional e disponibilizar a produção intelectual gerada no âmbito da Universidade, proporcionando maior visibilidade e acessibilidade, através da Internet. Relata os benefícios da integração da biblioteca digital com o catálogo on-line do Sistema de Bibliotecas da UFRGS, já consolidado como instrumento de registro e divulgação da produção do corpo docente e técnico-administrativo da Universidade. Apresenta os critérios que norteiam a inclusão de teses e dissertações em meio eletrônico. Aborda a expansão dos tipos de documentos a serem incluídos, com ênfase para materiais multimídia e o acervo retrospectivo de teses e dissertações, visando ampliar e qualificar a recuperação de informações.
Os metadados são usados para definir permissões, direitos de acesso, compartilhamento, reutilização, redistribuição e políticas, bem como os requisitos técnicos para visualização, acesso ou preservação de objetos digitalizados ou natos digitais. Este trabalho aborda questões teóricas sobre esquemas de metadados adotados em repositórios, permitindo manter a qualidade, completeza e consistência de seus dados. Apresenta os elementos Dublin Core (DC) utilizados no Lume, repositório digital da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), e a origem do seu preenchimento no formato SABi, baseado no MARC 21, utilizado na descrição da produção intelectual da Universidade na base SABi, Sistema de Automação de Bibliotecas da UFRGS. O esquema de metadados adotado tem o intuito de descrever os objetos digitais de forma mais acurada, priorizando as características intrínsecas dos tipos de documento, fornecendo pontos de acesso mais precisos ao usuário final e, consequentemente, aprimorando o processo de descoberta. Apresenta a tabela de conversão SABi/DC que permite povoar o Lume de forma ágil, promovendo sua consistência e uniformidade, evitando o retrabalho e duplicação de esforços. Conclui-se que metadados projetados de maneira cuidadosa resultará na boa gestão da informação a curto e longo prazos. A completeza e consistência possibilitam usá-los em um número quase infinito de novos materiais, interoperar com outros repositórios ou provedores de serviços e para mineração de dados.
