Data on new specimens of the rare subterranean catfish

A new species of the previously monotypic catfish genus Phreatobius is described from an artificial well in the village of Rio Pardo, located 90 km south of the city of Porto Velho, State of Rondônia, Brazil, in the drainage area of the Rio Branco (Rio Madeira system, Amazon basin). Phreatobius dracunculus n. sp. differs from its only congener, P. cisternarum, by the absence of eyes (vs. present), the lack of dark integumentary pigmentation (vs. faint dark pigment always present), the presence of five pectoral-fin rays (vs. four), ventral procurrent rays 11-13 (vs. 22 to 26), dorsal procurrent rays 29-31 (vs. 42 to 50), fewer vertebrae (52 or 53 vs. 59 to 64) and the larger pseudotympanus. The new species shows all diagnostic characters so far proposed for Phreatobius, including an unusual red coloration in life. The localities of the two species of Phreatobius are approximately 1900 km apart. That, in association with their peculiar and mostly inaccessible habitats, indicates that the genus may be widely distributed in the Amazon basin.

The PA-458 highway construction caused severe impact on mangrove Forest in the Ajuruteua peninsula, Bragança-PA, mainly at the Km 17. In order to better understand the effect of the highway construction on mangrove forest, it was undertaken a phytographic profile and a study on the structure of mangrove stands under three different levels of environmental destruction: Degraded Area (DA), Semi-Degraded Area (SDA), and Non-Degraded Area (NDA). Considering the three levels of destruction, mangrove stands comprise trees from 3 to 9 m of height, describing a gradient from the most impacted area till the non-impacted one, whereas values of mean DBH of these trees range from 4.2 to 10 cm. A biodiversidade aquática e a elevada produtividade pesqueira da Bacia Amazônica se devem principalmente à dinâmica anual dos pulsos de inundação e às extensas áreas alagáveis. Alguns dos principais impactos da construção de barragens para geração de hidroeletricidade incidem precisamente nesta dinâmica hidrológica. A construção da Usina Hidrelétrica (UHE) Belo Monte interfere na dinâmica hidrológica da Volta Grande do Xingu (VGX) ao desviar a maior parte da vazão para fora desse trecho do rio. Com base em uma análise crítica da literatura sobre o impacto de barragens e de monitoramentos em campo, que vêm sendo conduzidos tanto pelo empreendedor quanto por pesquisas independentes, verificamos que seriam necessários volumes de água substancialmente maiores do que o hidrograma proposto pela empresa e pela Agência Nacional de Águas (ANA), para não causar a total ruptura na conexão do rio com as planícies alagáveis, com efeitos negativos em cascata que comprometem, inclusive, a segurança alimentar em toda a VGX. A proposta de testar o hidrograma estabelecido pela empresa por seis anos, com uma drástica redução de vazão e perda da previsibilidade e regularidade do pulso anual de inundação, fere o Princípio Precaucionário, contraria o conhecimento ecológico acumulado sobre o tema e coloca em risco o ambiente, a biota e os modos de vida das populações humanas estabelecidas naquela região.Palavras-chave: Volta Grande do Xingu. Historical events, such as changes in sea level during the Pleistocene glacial cycles, had a strong impact on coastal habitats, limiting connectivity and promoting the genetic divergence of various species. In this study, we evaluated the influence of climate oscillations and the possibility of estuary function as a barrier to gene flow among populations of the four-eyed fish, Anableps anableps. This species is fully estuarine-resident, has internal fertilization, is viviparous and does not migrate across long distances. These features make the four-eyed fish an excellent model for the study of evolutionary processes related to genetic differentiation of species and populations in estuaries. The evolutionary history of A. anableps was inferred from phylogeographic and population analyses using sequences of the mitochondrial DNA Control Region of 13 populations distributed in the Amazon and Northeast Coast of Brazil from Calcoene (Amapa) to Parnaiba (Piaui). The 83 retrieved haplotypes show a pattern of four distinct mitochondrial lineages, with up to 3.4% nucleotide divergence among them. The evolutionary reconstruction suggests that these lineages diverged recently in the late Pleistocene/early Holocene after the Atlantic Ocean reaching current levels. Analysis of variability, neutrality and the genetic expansion pattern revealed that the lineages have distinct characteristics, which were shaped by the different geomorphological features of coastal regions combined with sea level oscillations over a very long period of time. Only few neighboring populations show a discreet gene flow. This study may also be helpful for designing new experiments to better understand the geomorphological evolutionary history of the estuaries of the Amazon and the Northeast Coast of Brazil using estuarine-resident species as a model.

This article documents the addition of 299 microsatellite marker loci and nine pairs of single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) EPIC primers to the Molecular Ecology Resources (MER) Database. Loci were developed for the following species: Alosa pseudoharengus, Alosa aestivalis, Aphis spiraecola, Argopecten purpuratus, Coreoleuciscus splendidus, Garra gotyla, Hippodamia convergens, Linnaea borealis, Menippe mercenaria, Menippe adina, Parus major, Pinus densiflora, Portunus trituberculatus, Procontarinia mangiferae, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, Schizothorax richardsonii, Scophthalmus rhombus, Tetraponera aethiops, Thaumetopoea pityocampa, Tuta absoluta and Ugni molinae. These loci were cross-tested on the following species: Barilius bendelisis, Chiromantes haematocheir, Eriocheir sinensis, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Eucalyptus cladocalix, Eucalyptus globulus, Garra litaninsis vishwanath, Garra para lissorhynchus, Guindilla trinervis, Hemigrapsus sanguineus, Luma chequen. Guayaba, Myrceugenia colchagüensis, Myrceugenia correifolia, Myrceugenia exsucca, Parasesarma plicatum, Parus major, Portunus pelagicus, Psidium guayaba, Schizothorax richardsonii, Scophthalmus maximus, Tetraponera latifrons, Thaumetopoea bonjeani, Thaumetopoea ispartensis, Thaumetopoea libanotica, Thaumetopoea pinivora, Thaumetopoea pityocampa ena clade, Thaumetopoea solitaria, Thaumetopoea wilkinsoni and Tor putitora. This article also documents the addition of nine EPIC primer pairs for Euphaea decorata, Euphaea formosa, Euphaea ornata and Euphaea yayeyamana.
