-An experiment was carried out under field conditions to assess the effects of soil management (no-tillage-NT and conventional tillage-CT) and crop rotation systems on microbial biomass-C (C mic ), basal soil respiration (BSR), metabolic quotient (qCO 2 ), soil organic carbon content (C org ) and microbial carbon to organic carbon ratio (C mic /C org ). Soil samples were collected on an area cultivated with wheat as winter crop and soybean as summer crop, both in rotation with vetch, maize and oats. Samples were also collected in a secondary forest used as reference. Data of each management system (NT and CT) were compared to forest area by "t" test (p<0.05) and crop rotations were compared by Tukey test (p<0.05). All data were submitted to multivariate analysis (Principal Component Analysis -PCA). There were observed significant differences ("t" test; p<0.05) for C mic , BSR, qCO 2 and C mic /C org between NT and CT, by which NT values resemble those for forest area. For crop rotations significant differences (Tukey test; p<0.05) were found only for BSR and qCO 2 . The sum of the two first principal components on the PCA explained about 75% of the data variation. PCA showed NT closest to forest area than CT, especially treatments with soybean and vetch as consecutive crops. The forest area-NT clustering was mostly due to C mic and C mic /C org relationship. Results indicate that the NT system is more sustainable than the CT system and can contribute for the accumulation a greater quantity of carbon in soil.Key words -Microbial biomass.
Organic cultivation of coffee cultivars grown under full sun and under shadingAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of two organic cultivation systems on the growth, phenology, nutrition, and productivity of coffee cultivars, as well as on soil chemical characteristics. Six coffee cultivars were evaluated under both a monoculture system under full sun, and an intercropped system with banana and Erythrina verna plants for shading. The experimental design adopted was the randomized blocks with four replicates. The shading reduced the growth rate of cultivars only during the first 15 months of cultivation. After three years of cultivation, the shading reduced the plant diameter, the number of branches and the number of nodes; increased the leaf area and grain size; reduced soil K content and increased N and Mg contents in coffee plant leaves. In the first harvesting (March 2004), the average yield of the cultivars was smaller in the shading system showing that this treatment delayed grain maturity. In the second harvesting (June 2004), there were differences among cultivars, but not between cropping systems. Yield total average for the two harvestings was the same in the two systems. The cultivars Tupi, Icatu, and Obatã are more promising in shading system.
Neighborhood and spatial analysis in plant breedingAbstract -Three forms of spatial analysis were compared to the analysis of the normal Gauss-Markov model in genetical experiments, supposing progeny effects as random: moving averages on raw data (MM), moving averages on residual data (Papadakis -PPD), and spatial analysis modelling with residual covariances (AE). The local control information was initially ignored to test the effectiveness of spatial analysis. Thereafter, the different forms of spatial analysis were applied to the complete model, considering the local control of lattice design. The average values of proportions between estimates of variance components and of heritability were used as a discussion guide to determine the best form of analysis. Results showed that ignoring the experimental design, using spatial information was not effective, in general. In average, MM and PPD improved the original model justified by design, in contrast to AE. AE, although ineffective, did not change variance component estimates and heritability. This property guarantees that the combination of random effects for progenies and AE does not violate the assumptions (some of these justified by the design). This is specially useful in large experiments, with a huge number of progenies.
Substances that mimic endogenous hormones may alter the cell signaling that govern prostate development and predispose it to developing lesions in adult and senile life. Bisphenol A is able to mimic estrogens, and studies have demonstrated that low levels of exposure to this compound have caused alterations during prostate development. The aim of this study was to describe the prostate development in both male and female neonatal gerbils in normal conditions and under exposure to BPA during intrauterine life, and also to analyze whether the effects of intrauterine exposure to BPA remain in adulthood. Morphological, stereological, three-dimensional reconstruction, and immunohistochemical methods were employed. The results demonstrated that in 1-day-old normal gerbils, the female paraurethral glands and the male ventral lobe are morphologically similar, although its tissue components-epithelial buds (EB), periurethral mesenchyme (PeM), paraurethral mesenchyme (PaM) or ventral mesenchymal pad (VMP), and smooth muscle (SM)-have presented different immunolabeling pattern for androgen receptor (AR), and for proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA). Moreover, we observed a differential response of male and female prostate to intrauterine BPA exposure. In 1-day-old males, the intrauterine exposure to BPA caused a decrease of AR-positive cells in the PeM and SM, and a decrease of the proliferative status in the EB. In contrast, no morphological alterations were observed in ventral prostate of adult males. In 1-day-old females, BPA exposure promoted an increase of estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) positive cells in PeM and PaM, a decrease of AR-positive cells in EB and PeM, besides a reduction of cell proliferation in EB. Additionally, the adult female prostate of BPA-exposed animals presented an increase of AR- and PCNA-positive cells. These results suggest that the prostate of female gerbils were more susceptible to the intrauterine BPA effects, since they became more proliferative in adult life.
-Frugivorous flies have been acquiring great economic importance in coffee crop because they cause premature dropping of coffee beans and significantly decrease the quality of the beverage. The coffee plant is also a natural reservoir of Tephritidae species that infest fruits of economic importance. This study evaluated the influence of the shaded and unshaded coffee systems, under organic management, on the natural infestation of fruits of Coffea arabica L. var. Icatu Amarelo by frugivorous flies. An experiment in completely randomized design was carried out in Valença, RJ, Brazil, with two treatments (shaded coffee with Musa sp. and Erithrina verna Vell. and unshaded coffee monoculture) and four replicates. A 1kg-sample of maturing fruits per plot was harvested in Mach 2004 to evaluate infestation and identify the flies. The mean infestation index was significantly higher in the shaded coffee system. Four species of Tephritidae (Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann), Anastrepha obliqua (Macquart) and Anastrepha sororcula Zucchi), and six of Lonchaeidae (Neosilba pendula (Bezzi), Neosilba pseudopendula (Korytkowski and Ojeda), Neosilba certa (Walker), Neosilba glaberrima (Wiedemann), Neosilba n.sp.9 and Neosilba n.sp.10) were recovered from coffee fruits. Nine parasitoid species were obtained, six belonging to Braconidae (Asobara anastrephae (Muesebeck), Doryctobracon areolatus (Szépligeti), Doryctobracon brasiliensis (Szépligeti), Utetes anastrephae (Viereck), Opius bellus Gahan and Opius sp.), and three to Figitidae (Aganaspis pelleranoi (Brèthes), Dicerataspis flavipes (Kieffer) and Odontosema anastrephae Borgmeier). The total percent parasitism was 8.8% and 12.4% in the shaded and unshaded coffee systems, respectively.
