BackgroundBrazil is currently experiencing a nutrition transition: the displacement of traditional diets with foods high in saturated fat, sodium, and cholesterol and an increase in sedentary lifestyles. Despite these trends, our understanding of child obesity in Brazil is limited. Thus, the aims of this study were (1) to investigate the current prevalence of overweight and obesity in a large sample of children and adolescents living in São Paulo, Brazil, and (2) to identify the lifestyle behaviors associated with an increased risk of obesity in young Brazilians.MethodsA total of 3,397 children and adolescents (1,596 male) aged 7-18 years were randomly selected from 22 schools in São Paulo, Brazil. Participants were classified as normal weight, overweight, or obese based on international age- and sex-specific body mass index thresholds. Selected sociodemographic, physical activity, and nutrition behaviors were assessed via questionnaire.ResultsOverall, 19.4% of boys and 16.1% of girls were overweight while 8.9% and 4.3% were obese. Two-way analysis of variance revealed that the prevalence of overweight and obesity was significantly higher in boys and in younger children when compared to girls and older children, respectively (P < 0.05 for both). Logistic regression analysis revealed that overweight was associated with more computer usage, parental encouragement to be active, and light soft drink consumption after controlling for differences in sex, age, and parental education (P < 0.05 for all). Conversely, overweight was associated with less active transport to school, eating before sleep, and consumption of breakfast, full-sugar soft drinks, fried food and confectionery (P < 0.05 for all).ConclusionsOur results show that obesity in São Paulo children and adolescents has reached a level equivalent to that seen in many developed countries. We have also identified three key modifiable factors related to obesity that may be appropriate targets for future intervention in Brazilian youth: transport mode to school, computer usage, and breakfast consumption.

BackgroundDeterminants of public healthcare expenditures in type 2 diabetics are not well investigated in developing nations and, therefore, it is not clear if higher physical activity decreases healthcare costs. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between physical activity and the expenditures in public healthcare on type 2 diabetes mellitus treatment.MethodsCross-sectional study carried out in Brazil. A total of 121 type 2 diabetics attended to in two Basic Healthcare Units were evaluated. Public healthcare expenditures in the last year were estimated using a specific standard table. Also evaluated were: socio-demographic variables; chronological age; exogenous insulin use; smoking habits; fasting glucose test; diabetic neuropathy and anthropometric measures. Habitual physical activity was assessed by questionnaire.ResultsAge (r = 0.20; p = 0.023), body mass index (r = 0.33; p = 0.001) and waist-to-hip ratio (r = 0.20; p = 0.025) were positively related to expenditures on medication for the treatment of diseases other than diabetes. Insulin use was associated with increased expenditures. Higher physical activity was associated with lower expenditure, provided medication for treatment of diseases other than diabetes (OR = 0.19; p = 0.007) and medical consultations (OR = 0.26; p = 0.029).ConclusionsType 2 diabetics with higher enrollment in physical activity presented consistently lower healthcare expenditures for the public healthcare system.

Physically inactive subjects in different domains of physical activity have increased likelihood to be inserted at groups of higher healthcare expenditure.

ABSTRACT:Objective: To analyze the occurrence of sleep-related disorders among adults from Presidente Prudente, Brazil, as well as to identify associations with behavioral, socio-demographic and nutritional status variables. Methods: After random selection of the sample, interviews were performed with 743 adults of both genders, living in Presidente Prudente, Brazil. Sleep-related disorders, demographic variables (sex, age, ethnicity and schooling), behavioral variables (leisure physical activity, alcohol consumption, and smoking) and nutritional status were analyzed by questionnaires. Results: The prevalence of sleep-related disorders was 46.7%, with 95% confidence interval (95%CI) 43.1 -50.2. In the multivariate analysis, female sex, with odds ratio (OR) 1.74 (95%CI 1.26 -2.40), schooling (OR = 0.49; 95%CI 0.28 -0.82), overweight (OR = 1.99; 95%CI 1.39 -2.85) and obesity (OR = 2.90; 95%CI 1.94 -4.35) were associated with sleep-related disorders. Conclusion: There is high occurrence of sleep-related disorders in this sample, which was associated with female sex, lower schooling, overweight and obesity.

BackgroundAmong adults, obesity has been positively related to bone mineral density. However, recent findings have pointed out that abdominal obesity could be negatively related to bone density. The above mentioned relationship is not clear among pediatric populations. Therefore, this cross-sectional study analyzed the relationship between thickness of abdominal adipose tissue and bone mineral variables in sedentary obese children and adolescents.MethodsOne hundred and seventy five obese children and adolescents (83 male and 92 female) with ages ranging from 6 to 16 years-old were analyzed. Bone mineral content and density were estimated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and ultrasound equipment which estimated the thickness of the abdominal adipose tissue. Pubertal stage was self-reported by the participants.ResultsThe mean age was 11.1 (SD = 2.6). Thickness of the abdominal adipose tissue was negatively related to bone mineral density (r = −0.17 [r95%CI: -0.03;-0.32]), independent of gender, pubertal stage and other confounders (β = −0.134 ± 0.042 [β95%CI: -0.217; -0.050]).ConclusionsIn sedentary obese children and adolescents abdominal obesity is negatively related to bone mineral density, suggesting a potential link between abdominal obesity and osteoporosis.

OBJETIVOS: Observar se existem diferenças nos valores monetários destinados aos procedimentos de saúde para o tratamento de pacientes diabéticos tipo 2 quando estratificados em diferentes níveis de atividade física habitual. SUJEITOS E MÉTODOS: Cento e vinte um diabéticos tipo 2 foram avaliados em duas unidades básicas de saúde de Bauru, SP. Atividade física foi avaliada por meio de entrevista. Retroagindo um ano ao dia da avaliação, por meio de notas fiscais, foram computados valores de exames, medicamentos e consultas médicas e de enfermagem. RESULTADOS: Quando comparados aos diabéticos ativos, os sedentários apresentaram gastos com consultas em clínico-geral 63% superiores (p = 0,017). Gastos com medicamentos para o tratamento de outras doenças também foram superiores em diabéticos sedentários (p = 0,001). CONCLUSÕES: Quando comparados de acordo com a prática de atividades físicas, diabéticos tipo 2 com menor prática de atividades físicas apresentam maiores custos com serviços médicos e consumo de medicamentos.
