ABSTRACT:Objective: To analyze the occurrence of sleep-related disorders among adults from Presidente Prudente, Brazil, as well as to identify associations with behavioral, socio-demographic and nutritional status variables. Methods: After random selection of the sample, interviews were performed with 743 adults of both genders, living in Presidente Prudente, Brazil. Sleep-related disorders, demographic variables (sex, age, ethnicity and schooling), behavioral variables (leisure physical activity, alcohol consumption, and smoking) and nutritional status were analyzed by questionnaires. Results: The prevalence of sleep-related disorders was 46.7%, with 95% confidence interval (95%CI) 43.1 -50.2. In the multivariate analysis, female sex, with odds ratio (OR) 1.74 (95%CI 1.26 -2.40), schooling (OR = 0.49; 95%CI 0.28 -0.82), overweight (OR = 1.99; 95%CI 1.39 -2.85) and obesity (OR = 2.90; 95%CI 1.94 -4.35) were associated with sleep-related disorders. Conclusion: There is high occurrence of sleep-related disorders in this sample, which was associated with female sex, lower schooling, overweight and obesity.
(45 to 59.9 years,), with some alteration of sleep ) and obese (OR = 2.33 [1:26 to 4:33]
Introduction: With the rapid increase in life expectancy, systematic physical exercise programs can have a good influence on the functional capacity of the elderly, especially in relation to institutionalization. Objective: To analyze the association between a systematic physical exercise program and functional capacity in institutionalized elderly. Methods: The sample included 30 elderly subjects (16 women and 14 men) aged 60 years or older (mean age = 74.43), divided into a control group (n=16) and a training group (n=14), residents in a long-stay institution. A training protocol of 12 weeks, two weekly sessions, was applied, and functional capacity was assessed before and after the intervention, through chair lift tests (lower limb strength), upper limb strength, timed up and go and handgrip dynamometry. The analysis pre and post-training of intervention and control groups was performed using paired Student t test and the ANOVA test for repeated measures. The level of significance was set at 5%. Results: The main statistical significance were found for the following functional tests: upper limb strength (training 15.6±4.1 x control 10.7±6.6 rep, p<0.05) and chair lift test (training 11.0±4.0 x control 8.0±3.1 rep, p<0.05). Conclusion: The protocol used proved to be effective in improving some of the functional capabilities of the institutionalized elderly.
Metodologia: Foram avaliados 50 atletas divididos em cinco grupos: goleiros (GO), zagueiros (ZA), laterais (LA), meio-campistas (MC) e atacantes (AT). ABSTRACTIntroduction: The knowledge on the ideal physical profile for each task, and on the injuries which mostly happen to each athlete, is essential to any successful team. This study had two aims: (a) to define the athletes' physical profile and (b) to epidemiologically study the injuries suffered during the Municipal Amateur Soccer Cup. Methodology: 50 athletes divided in five groups were assessed: goalkeepers (GO); fullbacks (FB); sideways (SW); midfielders (MF); forwards (FO). The injuries were classified by area, mechanism, severity and player's position. Results: The physical profile of the athletes was: 5'21'' ± 2.75'' height, 165.08 ± 1.79 lb weight, 15.19 ± 3.03 % body fat percentage, 27.56 ± 12.0 cm flexibility and age of 25.32 ± 4.41. The analysis held revealed significant differences between height (p < 0.001) and weight (p = 0.021) related to the athlete's position on the field, and correlation between injury occurrence and flexibility decrease. 21 injuries were recorded in 53 games, corresponding to 0.40 injuries/game, or 12 injuries/1,000 hours/athlete. Contact injuries represented 57%; nine injuries (43%) were light, and only five (24%) were considered severe. Conclusion: the athletes' physical profile assessed was similar to the previous reference and homogeneous in the bo...
The objective of this study was to analyze an association of sleep disorders and chronic diseases non-transmissible in patients older than 50 years attended by Basic Health Care Units of Presidente Prudente. Participated 363 patients. The history of diseases was self-reported through the use a questionnaire, the level of physical activity was evaluated by the Baecke questionnaire, and sleep quality was assessed using the Mini-Sleep Questionnaire. Anthropometric and body composition data were collected using stadiometer and scale, patients within the 75th percentile were considered obese. The statistical analysis was made by Student t test, chisquare, and binary logistic regression. The results showed that sleep disorders is associated with osteoporosis, arthritis / osteoarthritis, low back pain, depression and obesity. Additionally, obesity and physical inactivity influences the occurrence of chronic diseases non-transmissible. Keywords: Sleep disturbance. Chronic diseases. Brazilian national health system.
