Around the world, there is a growing increase in biofuels consumption, mainly ethanol and biodiesel as well as their blends with diesel that reduce the cost impact of biofuels while retaining some of the advantages of the biofuels. This increase is due to several factors like decreasing the dependence on imported petroleum; providing a market for the excess production of vegetable oils and animal fats; using renewable and biodegradable fuels; reducing global warming due to its closed carbon cycle by CO2 recycling; increasing lubricity; and reducing substantially the exhaust emissions of carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbons, and particulate emissions from diesel engines. However, there are major drawbacks in the use of biofuel blends as NOx tends to be higher, the intervals of motor parts replacement such as fuel filters are reduced and degradation by chronic exposure of varnish deposits in fuel tanks and fuel lines, paint, concrete, and paving occurs as some materials are incompatible. Here, fuel additives become indispensable tools not only to decrease these drawbacks but also to produce specified products that meet international and regional standards like EN 14214, ASTM D 6751, and DIN EN 14214, allowing the fuels trade to take place. Additives improve ignition and combustion efficiency, stabilize fuel mixtures, protect the motor from abrasion and wax deposition, and reduce pollutant emissions, among other features. Two basic trends are becoming more relevant:  the progressive reduction of sulfur content and the increased use of biofuels. Several additives' compositions may be used as long as they keep the basic chemical functions that are active.

The presence of carbonyl compounds (CCs) in wines has sparked the interest of researchers in several countries. The quantification of some of these compounds has been used as a parameter of quality for many fermented beverages. Although present in minute quantities (except for acetaldehyde), they have a strong olfactory impact. In addition, the CCs found in wines have a strong affinity for bisulfite and can form stable adducts, which will also interfere in the characteristics of aroma. The greatest challenge, however, is to predict which CCs have the strongest affinity for S(IV) and what conditions favor this interaction. To better understand the reaction of CC-bisulfite adduct formation (HASA), this study has evaluated the profile of 22 CCs in a "synthetic wine" containing bisulfite and in 10 real samples of different wines from the São Francisco Valley, northeastern Brazil. On the basis of principal component analysis (PCA) and dissociation constants, the results revealed that aliphatic aldehydes form adducts with S(IV), whereas ketones, cyclic aldehydes, and trans-alkenes interact weakly and are found predominantly in their free form. These results revealed also that pH 10 and 11 were defined as the most appropriate for CC-SO 2 adduct dissociation, and the total CCs were quantified reliably.

Lead is recognized worldwide as a poisonous metal. Thus, the determination of this element is often required in environmental, biological, food and geological samples. However, these analyses are difficult because such samples contain relatively low concentrations of lead, which fall below the detection limit of conventional analytical techniques such as flame atomic absorption spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Several preconcentration procedures to determine lead have therefore been devised, involving separation techniques such as liquid-liquid extraction, solid phase extraction, coprecipitation and cloud point extraction. Citing 160 references, this paper offers a critical review of preconcentration procedures for determining lead using spectroanalytical techniques.

In this study, particulate matter (PM) were characterized from a place impacted by heavy-duty vehicles (Bus Station) fuelled with diesel/biodiesel fuel blend (B3) in the city of Londrina, Brazil. Sixteen priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) concentrations were analyzed in the samples by their association with atmospheric PM, mass size distributions and major ions (fluorite, chloride, bromide, nitrate, phosphate, sulfate, nitrite, oxalate; fumarate, formate, succinate and acetate; lithium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and ammonium). Results indicate that major ions represented 21.2% particulate matter mass. Nitrate, sulfate, and ammonium, respectively, presented the highest concentration levels, indicating that biodiesel may also be a significant source for these ions, especially nitrate. Dibenzo[a,h]anthracene and indeno[1,2,3,-cd]pyrene were the main PAH found, and a higher fraction of PAH particles was found in diameters lower than 0.25 μm in Londrina bus station. The fine and ultrafine particles were dominant among the PM evaluated, suggesting that biodiesel decreases the total PAH emission. However, it does also increase the fraction of fine and ultrafine particles when compared to diesel.

Motor vehicles constitute a significant source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emissions to the atmosphere. Particle-phase priority pollutant PAH concentrations and total suspended particle mass (TSP) were measured in the Lapa bus station and the Americo Simas Tunnel, located in the city of Salvador, Brazil. Separate samples were collected at the bus station at different times of the day, including rush-and non-rushhour periods. The highest concentrations for nearly all 16 priority PAHs measured at the bus station were observed at 18:30 h, with chrysene showing the highest mean value (26.6 ng m 23 ). The highest average PAH concentrations measured in the tunnel were observed for pyrene (79.4 ¡ 11.5 ng m 23 ) followed by fluoranthene (39.0 ¡ 5.2 ng m 23 ) and chrysene (28.0 ¡ 4.17 ng m 23 ). TSP levels reached 423 mg m 23 in the bus station, and values as high as 2 mg m 23 in the tunnel. The measured Salvador tunnel PAH profiles are very similar to the Salvador bus station profiles, and are similar to PAH profiles reported for the Kojouike Tunnel, located in Kurashiki City, Japan, and the Caldecott Tunnel, located in Berkeley, California.
