OBJECTIVE:To evaluate user satisfaction with psychosocial healthcare services. METHODS:Qualitative and quantitative study conducted in psychosocial healthcare services in the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil, in 2006. The study combined quantitative and qualitative methods. Quantitative epidemiological data from a cross-sectional study including 1,162 users of 30 psychosocial healthcare services was used. The instrument used to evaluate users' satisfaction was the Brazilian version of the WHO Users' Satisfaction Scale (SATIS-BR), a 1 to 5-point scale. Qualitative data was collected from fi ve case studies using a fourth generation approach. Information was obtained from fi eld observations and interviews (between ten and 13 users in each fi eld, totaling 57 users) and presented to users in validation and negotiation workshops. RESULTS:The SATIS-BR scale showed that users positively evaluated all items, overall mean 4.4 (SD=0.4). Communication and relationship with psychosocial healthcare services staff had mean 4.5 (SD=0.5), and access to information through staff had mean 4.8. Satisfaction with care service was the lowest, mean 4.1, and general service infrastructure had mean 3.9. The qualitative study revealed that, according to users, the quality of treatment provided was good and the outcome was satisfactory. Their new status, better access to services, ending of their physical and social isolation, response to their demands and helping them reorganize their lives -all contributed to users' satisfaction. CONCLUSIONS:The complementary results of both study approaches showed that users are satisfi ed with care provided at the psychosocial healthcare services studied.
Objective To understand the reasons that lead men who use alcohol and other drugs to attempt suicide. Methods Qualitative research at an alcohol and psychosocial drugs support centre (CAPSad) in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in December of 2011, with 11 men who use alcohol and other drugs and who attempted suicide. Data were collected by means of phenomenological interviewing. The phenomenological sociology of Alfred Schütz was used to analyse and interpret the interview statements. Results The results led to three categories: attempted suicide triggered by alcohol and drug use; attempted suicide triggered by the family lifeworld; and attempted suicide triggered by everyday feelings. Conclusion We found that alcohol and drug abuse and the different life circumstances of men in their families and social relationships contributed to the suicide attempt.
Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation is often used as a therapy for patients with certain blood, metabolic or immune system disorders. The United States' National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) works to facilitate such life-saving transplants by coordinating the donor search and match process. However, concern exists that the NMDP Registry is underutilized and under-representative of racial and ethnic minorities. African-Americans and Hispanics are somewhat under-represented within the total number of donors, and it is estimated that the Registry is used by only approximately one-third of patients needing transplants. The NMDP has instituted programmes that address such concerns, resulting in an increase in both the total number of donors and the minority representation on the Registry. It has also increased efforts to recruit donors of umbilical cord blood, often a viable alternative source of haematopoietic stem cells. Over the past 8 years, the Registry has grown by more than 30% to contain over seven million donors, and the proportional distribution of racial and ethnic groups on the Registry has steadily approached their proportional distribution in the US population. Continued efforts on the part of the NMDP to maintain a Registry that is large in number and ethnically diverse should help ensure access to haematopoietic stem cell transplants for all patients who need them. The procedures and experience of the NMDP and its Registry may have implications for registries elsewhere in the world as they confront similar issues of number and diversity.
