Ponce Pinedo (1945) was the first to report the existence of autochthonous cases of schistosomiasis mansoni in the Dominican Republic, and later (1947) he was able to demonstrate that an endemic focus of the disease exists in the vicinity of Hato Mayor, Seibo Province. He succeeded in collecting infected Austrakrbi@ glabratus from two streams near the town of Hato Mayor and recovered adults and eggs of &histosoma manwni, after exposing rabbits to the cercariae from these snails. However, the extent and seriousness of the endemic focus at Hato Mayor has not been known, and there has even been doubt in some quarters that the parasite is actually established there.
Summary
Four experiments, in which mice received 1 to 4 doses of 200 Trichinella spiralis larvae at 21-day intervals, revealed a marked progressive decrease in the percentage of worms recovered from the small intestine of the mice and a striking progressive increase in the precipitin titer of their sera. This effect was shown to vary with the number of doses administered.

Too much credit, we wish to emphasize, cainiot be ••iven the few men who opened the way by exi)orinient for the sneeessfiil growing of fruit by the general poi)nhition of tliewest. To tlie.se benefactois (I do not think this terra too strong) we owe onr everlasting gratitude, and to these men, and those, who, like the author of this little work, are ever alert for that whicii will be of enduring benetit to our people in the way of fruiting and beautifying the homes of the West, this little volume is respectfully dedicated. This work is not written for the scientitic horticulturist, for he needs no such help : but for the energetic planters who, with sleeves rolled up, go at fruit-growing in a practical and businesslike way, and who are willing to drain the fount of experience, "dear bought" and practical, provided by those who have gone before in tliis great industry. Trusting that tliis volume may be of benetit to such, and that it maj'^be the means of fruiting and beautifying many western homes, we submit the following pages with the utmost sincerity, earnestness and respect.
