Little penguins, Eudyptula minor, from a breeding colony on Phillip Island, Victoria were radio-tracked at sea during incubation, chick-rearing and non-breeding periods from 1991 to 1993. Their locations, which we have assumed to reflect foraging movements, varied according to season and breeding activities, and there were marked differences from year to year. Duration and distance of trips ranged from single day-trips a few kilometres from Phillip Island, typically during the breeding season, to longer trips outside the breeding season up to 500 km away lasting more than a month, but 95% of all birds located were within 20 km of the coast. In the breeding season foraging trips averaged 4.4 days during incubation compared with 2.1 days when there were chicks in the nest; in the non-breeding period foraging trips took 5.2 days on average. The duration of trips for adults feeding chicks increased with the age of the chicks. Birds from nests on the north and south sides of Phillip Island differed in their use of areas close to the island, but showed a similar distribution on more distant trips. The location of foraging trips is discussed in relation to information on the abundance of prey species of fish within the foraging range of the birds.

Nearly 1500 foliage samples were collected from a total of 156 plant species, distributed at 16 study sites representing a wide range of forests and woodlands in south-eastern Australia. Samples were collected in all months. Invertebrates present in samples were counted, sorted into 13 categories, and the number present (> 3 mm in length) converted into density estimates. Densities of all invertebrates combined and invertebrate diversity were also calculated. Despite high variability there were some obvious distributional patterns for most categories. Three major dichotomies affected abundance and distribution of invertebrates: these were presence or absence of flowers, whether the plant species was Eucalyptus or other, and i/Eucalyptus, whether the plant species was Symphyomyrtus or Monocalyptus. The presence of flowers in foliage samples increased the abundance of most invertebrate taxa. Compared to foliage of non-Eucalyptus species. Eucalyptus foliage had more lerp-forming psyllids and miscellaneous larvae, but fewer Arachnida, Coleoptera, Psocoptera, Hemiptera (other), Thysanoptera, Diptera, and total arthropods. Foliage of Symphyomyrtus species had higher densities of most categories (and particularly lerp-forming psyllids) than that o/Monocalyptus.There were seasonal variations in abundance in most invertebrate taxa, but these patterns were different for Eucalyptus and non-Eucalyptus species. For most sites abundance of all arthropods combined was lowest in winter, but this decline was not especially pronounced, and was reversed at more xeric sites.For most categories there were significant differences between study sites in abundance and for some this was related to position of sites on a moisture gradient. In general total arthropod densities were highest at intermediate and xeric sites. There were some significant differences in arthropod communities for the same plant species at different study sites.Sample height, plant height, and the ratio of these were relatively unimportant variables. Likewise, the ratio of leaf width : leaf length was not significantly correlated with abundance for any invertebrate category across 128 plant species, but mean leaf size was negatively correlated with densities of Arachnida and total invertebrates. The distributions of some invertebrate categories were intercorrelated.

Chiaradia, A., Forero, M. G., Hobson, K. A., and Cullen, J. M. 2010. Changes in diet and trophic position of a top predator 10 years after a mass mortality of a key prey. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 67: 1710–1720. After the disappearance of primary prey, seabirds exhibit gradually decreased breeding performance, and eventually the population size drops. Results are presented of an investigation into the diet of little penguins (Eudyptula minor) at Phillip Island, Australia, during a period when their key prey, pilchard (Sardinops sagax), declined dramatically. Data from stomach flushing (1982–2006) were used, supported by stable isotope (δ15N, δ13C) analyses of blood samples (2003, 2004, and 2006). The effect of the pilchard mortality on penguin diet was immediate, the birds shifting to a diet almost devoid of pilchard, and this was followed by 2 years of low breeding success, with considerably fewer penguins coming ashore. During periods when pilchard was not part of the diet, penguins consumed prey of a higher trophic level, e.g. higher values of δ15N. Variability in penguin blood δ15N coincided with years of low prey diversity. The disappearance of pilchard resulted in a decrease in prey diversity and led penguins to “fish up” the foodweb, possibly because of the simplified trophic structure. After 1998, however, breeding success re-attained average levels and the numbers of penguins coming ashore increased, probably because of increased abundance of prey other than pilchard after a 3-year period of food scarcity. Although little penguins apparently compensated over time, a less-flexible diet could make them ultimately vulnerable to further changes in their foodweb.
