Camelina meal (Camelina sativa) (CM) is a potential protein source for aquaculture feeds, on account of its crude protein level (380 g kg À1 ) and inclusion of most indispensable amino acids. Two experiments were conducted with rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Rainbow trout (44.9 g fish À1 ) were fed diets with CM at 0 g kg À1 (0% CM), 70 g kg À1 (7% CM), 140 g kg À1 (14% CM) or 210 g kg À1 (21% CM) for 12 weeks at 14°C in freshwater, and salmon (241.8 g fish À1 ) were fed diets with CM at 0 g kg À1 (0% CM), 80 g kg À1 (8% CM), 160 g kg À1 (16% CM) or 240 g kg À1 (24% CM) for 16 weeks at 14°C in sea water. Growth, lipid and amino acid tissue compositions were compared between species. Trout could tolerate up to 14% CM diets without affecting the growth compared to the control, while salmon fed ≥8% CM gained less weight than the control (P = 0.008). The feed conversion ratio in trout fed 21% CM was higher than the control (P = 0.002), and feed intake in salmon fed ≥8% CM was lower than the control (P = 0.006). Trout fatty acid and amino acid composition showed minimal differences between CM-fed and control-fed fish, while salmon showed significant alterations after feeding CM diets. Multivariate analyses emphasized differences in tissue composition between species fed CM diets.
Lipid classes, fatty acids (FAs), and stable carbon isotopes of FAs were used to investigate dietary sources of organic carbon for juvenile Atlantic cod Gadus morhua during settlement into eelgrass Zostera marina. Primary producers, epibenthic prey, zooplankton, and fish were collected from August to November 2002 in shallow (<10 m) eelgrass in Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland, Canada. Lipid data indicated that zooplankton (> 80 µm) were associated with fresh organic material, while seston (5-80 µm) had high levels of bacterial FA and non-acyl lipids, typical of sedimentary material. Zooplankton, mysids, and amphipods showed a seasonal decrease in 22:6n-3 with a concomitant increased in the ubiquitous terrestrial indicators 18:2n-3 and 18:3n-3. Based on essential FA composition of prey, there was a decrease in the quality of food available to juvenile fish from August until November. Earlier (August) pelagic juveniles had higher levels of marine-sourced FA (22:6n-3) than late (November) arrivers. Further, in October and November settled juveniles had higher proportions of terrestrial FA biomarkers than pelagic cod, indicating an increased dietary terrestrial input at settlement. Isotopic evidence demonstrated that eelgrass was the most enriched (-14 ‰) source of organic carbon and supported multivariate FA analysis, confirming that eelgrass was not incorporated into the food web of juvenile cod. Increased terrestrial input of organic carbon coupled with low proportions of dietary essential FAs indicate that the functional significance of this habitat is refuge and not nutrition.
Due to limited fish meal and fish oil resources and their high costs for the aquaculture industry, it is necessary to find alternative sustainable sources of protein and lipids. Therefore, seven different diets were formulated with different levels of animal by-products, vegetable proteins, fish oil and rapeseed oil, to feed farmed Atlantic salmon, and their effects on growth performance, muscle lipid class, and fatty acid composition were examined. Protein sources included anchovy, poultry, feather, blood, corn, soy and wheat. Growth performance indicated that the diet with the lowest fish meal and fish oil content resulted in the lowest weight gain and final weight, followed by the diet containing the highest level of animal by-products. The lipid class analysis showed no statistical difference in the muscle total lipid content using different diets. However, significant statistical differences were observed among the main lipid classes; triacylglycerols, phospholipids, and sterols. The diet containing 1.4% omega-3 long-chain fatty acids resulted in the highest content of triacylglycerols and phospholipids. Diets containing medium and low levels of fish oil and fish meal, respectively, led to as high a level of ω3 fatty acids in muscle as when fish were fed diets with high levels of fish meal and fish oil. The results of this study suggest that feeding a diet containing low levels of fish meal and moderate levels of fish oil does not significantly affect ω3 fatty acid composition in muscle. Fish meal could be reduced to 5% without affecting growth as long as there was a minimum of 5% fish oil, and animal by-products did not exceed 26% of the diet.
