Xenarthrans—anteaters, sloths, and armadillos—have essential functions for ecosystem maintenance, such as insect control and nutrient cycling, playing key roles as ecosystem engineers. Because of habitat loss and fragmentation, hunting pressure, and conflicts with domestic dogs, these species have been threatened locally, regionally, or even across their full distribution ranges. The Neotropics harbor 21 species of armadillos, 10 anteaters, and 6 sloths. Our data set includes the families Chlamyphoridae (13), Dasypodidae (7), Myrmecophagidae (3), Bradypodidae (4), and Megalonychidae (2). We have no occurrence data on Dasypus pilosus (Dasypodidae). Regarding Cyclopedidae, until recently, only one species was recognized, but new genetic studies have revealed that the group is represented by seven species. In this data paper, we compiled a total of 42,528 records of 31 species, represented by occurrence and quantitative data, totaling 24,847 unique georeferenced records. The geographic range is from the southern United States, Mexico, and Caribbean countries at the northern portion of the Neotropics, to the austral distribution in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. Regarding anteaters, Myrmecophaga tridactyla has the most records (n = 5,941), and Cyclopes sp. have the fewest (n = 240). The armadillo species with the most data is Dasypus novemcinctus (n = 11,588), and the fewest data are recorded for Calyptophractus retusus (n = 33). With regard to sloth species, Bradypus variegatus has the most records (n = 962), and Bradypus pygmaeus has the fewest (n = 12). Our main objective with Neotropical Xenarthrans is to make occurrence and quantitative data available to facilitate more ecological research, particularly if we integrate the xenarthran data with other data sets of Neotropical Series that will become available very soon (i.e., Neotropical Carnivores, Neotropical Invasive Mammals, and Neotropical Hunters and Dogs). Therefore, studies on trophic cascades, hunting pressure, habitat loss, fragmentation effects, species invasion, and climate change effects will be possible with the Neotropical Xenarthrans data set. Primates play an important role in ecosystem functioning and offer critical insights into human evolution, biology, behavior, and emerging infectious diseases. There are 26 primate species in the Atlantic Forests of South America, 19 of them endemic. We compiled a dataset of 5,472 georeferenced locations of 26 native and 1 introduced primate species, as hybrids in the genera Callithrix and Alouatta. The dataset includes 700 primate communities, 8,121 single species occurrences and 714 estimates of primate population sizes, covering most natural forest types of the tropical and subtropical Atlantic Forest of Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina and some other biomes. On average, primate communities of the Atlantic Forest harbor 2 ± 1 species (range = 1–6). However, about 40% of primate communities contain only one species. Alouatta guariba (N = 2,188 records) and Sapajus nigritus (N = 1,127) were the species with the most records. Callicebus barbarabrownae (N = 35), Leontopithecus caissara (N = 38), and Sapajus libidinosus (N = 41) were the species with the least records. Recorded primate densities varied from 0.004 individuals/km2 (Alouatta guariba at Fragmento do Bugre, Paraná, Brazil) to 400 individuals/km2 (Alouatta caraya in Santiago, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil). Our dataset reflects disparity between the numerous primate census conducted in the Atlantic Forest, in contrast to the scarcity of estimates of population sizes and densities. With these data, researchers can develop different macroecological and regional level studies, focusing on communities, populations, species co‐occurrence and distribution patterns. Moreover, the data can also be used to assess the consequences of fragmentation, defaunation, and disease outbreaks on different ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, species invasion or extinction, and community dynamics. The longevity of anthesis in S. sellowiana seems to be related to the mechanism of gradual dispensing of pollen, resulting in greater male reproductive success. This is in agreement with the pollen-donation hypothesis. The small number of ovules (four) of S. sellowiana and the high frequency and the foraging mode of its pollinators may favour the selection for floral longevity driven by male fitness in this system.

Este trabalho objetivou a análise do histórico de ocorrência de incêndios florestais do Parque Nacional do Itatiaia (PNI), primeiro parque do Brasil. Para isso, foi realizado um levantamento de informações no PNI, sobre o número total de incêndios, a extensão das áreas queimadas, os meses de maior incidência, a relação do fogo ao período de seca, a fauna e flora atingidas, os agentes causadores, as principais causas e as perícias dos incêndios. Foram identificados 323 incêndios . Apenas nos últimos sete anos foram queimados 5.724 ha, dentro e no entorno do Parque. As queimadas ocorreram sobretudo no inverno (90%), período de seca, durante os meses de julho a outubro. As fitofisionomias com as maiores extensões atingidas foram os campos de altitude, ecossistema nativo da Mata Atlântica e restrito às montanhas do sudeste. De maneira geral, poucas informações foram identificadas em relação à fauna afetada, as causas e os agentes causadores dos incêndios, sendo que, por apenas duas vezes, foram realizadas perícias. Os dados revelaram a fragilidade do PNI diante dos incêndios florestais e a importância de serem implementadas ações de prevenção e combate, que garantam efetivamente a proteção integral dessa Unidade de Conservação. Floral volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play important roles in plant-pollinator interactions. We investigated the reproductive ecology and floral VOCs of Zygopetalinae orchids to understand the relationship between floral scents and pollinators. We performed focal observations, phenological censuses and breeding system experiments in eight species in southeast Brazil. Floral scents were collected and analysed using SPME/GC-MS. We performed multivariate analyses to group species according to affinities of their VOCs and define compounds associated to each plant. Dichaea cogniauxiana was pollinated by weevils which use their developing ovules, while D. pendula was pollinated by the same weevils and perfume-collecting male euglossine bees. The other species were deceit-pollinated by bees. Zygopetalum crinitum was pollinated by carpenter bees, while W. warreana, Z. mackayi and Z. maxillare were bumblebee-pollinated. The latter was also pollinated by Centris confusa. Breeding system varied widely with no association to any pollinator group. Most VOCs are common to other floral scents. Zygopetalum crinitum presented an exclusive blend of VOCs, mainly composed of benzenoids. The scents of Pabstia jugosa, Promenaea xanthina and the Zygopetalum spp. were similar. The bumblebee-pollinated species have flowering periods partially overlapped, thus neither phenology nor pollinators constitute hybridization barriers among these species. Euglossines are not the only pollinators of Zygopetalinae. Different VOCs, size and lifespan of flowers are associated with distinct pollinators. A distinctive VOC bouquet may determine specialisation in carpenter bees or male euglossines within bee-pollinated flowers. Finally, visitation of deceit-pollinated flowers by perfume-collecting euglossines allows us to hypothesise how pollination by this group of bees had evolved.

A utilização de armadilhas fotográficas na amostragem de longa duração de mamíferos terrestres pode fornecer informações precisas sobre o estado de conservação de uma área. No entanto, em toda a região sudeste do Brasil, apenas outros dois estudos realizaram esforço amostral comparável ao realizado neste estudo entre 2010 e 2012, para quatro trilhas em floresta montana no Parque Nacional do Itatiaia (PNI = 3.885 dias-armadilha) e no Parque Nacional da Serra dos Órgãos (PARNASO = 9.197 dias-armadilha). O número de registros fotográficos foi 377 (PARNASO) e 158 (PNI), com respectivamente 15 e 22 espécies identificadas, sendo a maior parte destas consideradas ameaçadas de extinção, contando com últimos registros para mais de 60 anos atrás. Além dos registros de novas ocorrências para estas UC, como o tatu-de-rabo-mole-grande (Cabassous tatouay), nossos resultados também revelaram desequilíbrio na estrutura da comunidade presente no PARNASO para onde apenas quatro espécies foram responsáveis por 77,9% dos registros, com presença dominante do cão doméstico (Canis lupus familiaris). As espécies mais registradas no PNI foram respectivamente a onça-parda (Puma concolor), o porco-queixada (Tayassu pecari) e a paca (Cuniculus paca), enquanto que no PARNASO foram a onça-parda, o cão doméstico, e o gambá (Didelphis aurita). Nossos resultados apontam para a necessidade de controle e do manejo de espécies exóticas, como cão doméstico identificado em elevada frequência no PARNASO, e que pode influenciar negativamente no estado de conservação e estrutura da comunidade.

RESUMO O fogo descontrolado (i.e. incêndio) de origem antrópica é a ameaça mais frequente nos campos de altitude no Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Mais de 70% das ocorrências nesse ecossistema foram registradas no interior do Parque Nacional do Itatiaia-PNI. No entanto seus impactos ainda são pouco conhecidos. Compreender os processos associados à regeneração da vegetação de campos de altitude pós-fogo é sugerido pelo Plano de Manejo do PNI. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a composição florística e a estrutura da comunidade vegetal em quatro sítios localizados a 2500m de altitude e com diferentes históricos pós-fogo em cada um (1988, 2001, 2007 e 2010). Foi estudada uma área de 1600m² dividida entre fisionomias campestre graminóide e ilhas de vegetação sobre afloramentos rochosos. No total, foram amostradas 167 espécies de angiospermas e 16 de samambaias e licófitas, sendo 32% endêmicas do Sudeste do Brasil e 11% ameaçadas de extinção. Asteraceae apresentou quase 20% das espécies dentre as 63 famílias registradas. Entre as fisionomias, houve similaridade florística intra e entre sítios (>0,70). Comparando as duas fisionomias, os valores de similaridade foram em geral mais baixos (<0,70). A forma de vida hemicriptófita e o hábito herbáceo foram dominântes (área de cobertura) nas duas fisionomias. A riqueza entre quatro e sete anos pós-fogo teve aumento significativo (30% das espécies), com sítio 2010 apresentando 57,4% das espécies registradas e os demais sítios com valores acima de 80%. A regeneração da vegetação ocorreu relativamente rápido, fazendo com que sítios entre quatro e sete anos de regeneração tenham apresentado resultados similares da estrutura, composição e riqueza, do sítio com 25 anos de regeneração. Contudo, algumas das espécies endêmicas e ameaçadas de extinção não foram registradas pós-fogo em alguns sítios ou apresentaram frequência entre as mais baixas. Considerando que algumas destas espécies podem estar em processo de desaparecimento, estudos populacionais, reprodutivos e ecofisiológicos tornam-se prioritários, assim como estudos sobre ecologia do fogo neste tipo de ambiente.
