Experimentally obtained spectral dependencies of an optical signal influenced by intermodal interference in a fiber under various conditions (for example, different lengths or different fibers) are presented. It is shown that the difference between the propagating constants of the first two modes can be obtained from the measured spectrum. The obtained results illustrate the usefulness of such investigation for determination of basic parameters of fibers, especially for investigating the homogeneity of a produced fiber. © 2000 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers. We demonstrate a promising fabrication technology and basic optical characteristics of prepared strain variable polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) biconical optical fiber taper. For its preparation, silicone elastomer Sylgard 184 was used. Strain dependence of the PDMS fiber taper shows up to 140% elastic elongation. In the process of elongation of the PDMS fiber taper, the measured intermodal interference points to its employment for different sensor applications and opens new areas for developing various types of strain variable PDMS optical fiber devices.
