BackgroundLichen sclerosus is a mucocutaneous autoimmune disease which might be initiated by infectious pathogens as Borrelia Bugrdorferi and HPV. This disease shows destructive potential and is rarely diagnosed in oral mucosa. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the characteristics of cases described in literature from 1957 to 2016, looking to provide valuable evidence about clinicopathologic features of this disease.Material and MethodsA MedLine search was performed aiming to find oral lichen sclerosus cases in literature and discuss its demographical and pathological characteristics as well as treatment methods performed for these cases.Results34 oral lichen sclerosus cases with histological confirmation and one clinicopathologic study linked with this disease were found in literature. Oral lichen sclerosus affected most commonly female patients, were asymptomatic and not associated to skin or genital lesions. Furthermore, affected patients in a range of 7 – 70-years old (Average age = 31.81).ConclusionsOral lichen sclerosus is a rare pathologic process with slight predilection for prepubertal girls, for which topical corticosterois have demonstrated satisfactory therapeutic value. Key words:Lichen sclerosus et atrophicous, skin diseases, mouth disease, autoimmune diseases, mouth.
AbstractAiming the characterization of inflammatory lesions, 240 bovine hearts were examined using the Santos and slicing techniques. The hearts were obtained at local butcher shop in Nova Friburgo/RJ city. Samples with and without visible lesions, such as cysts, nodules or diffuse, focal, whitish ones, fixed in 10% formalin were submitted for histological examination, being routinely processed and stained with hematoxylin and eosin (HE). Cysticerci was found in viable and degenerated condition, being the last one predominant. In a general way, the histological exam of the degenerate cysticerci revealed granulomatous lesions, whose centers were characterized by caseous and/or calcareous material, multinucleate giant cells, histiocytes in palisade and infiltrated composed predominantly of lymphoid cells, wrapped up by a fibrous capsule that, some times, contained mineralized areas. Calcareous corpuscles were rare. Foci of non specific myocarditis associated, in some cases, to the fatty and fibrous infiltration, were observed in samples with or without macroscopic lesions and frequently they appeared surrounding the cysts of Sarcocystis sp. In general, it were remarkable the infection degree and the conspicuous presence of such cysts in the Purkinje fibers. Keywords: bovine, Cysticercus bovis, Sarcocystis sp., heart, myocarditis sanitary inspection. IntroduçãoAs moléstias inflamatórias do miocárdio comumente são infecciosas.
Salmonella infections are an important cause of mortality and morbidity in cattle, and subclinically infected animals are frequently found. The microorganism may exhibit multiple antibiotic resistance and may be able to survive in harsh environments such as the gallbladder. Salmonella Multiple Antibiotic Resistance (MAR) was detected in bile and gallbladder epithelium from cattle slaughtered in a plant in southern state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, under sanitary conditions. The frequency of resistance to each drug was not significantly different between bile and epithelium, except in the case of cefotaxime, which showed increased resistance in the bile. Aztreonam was the most effective antibiotic for inhibiting strain growth. Since the results showed Salmonella spp. strains resistant to twelve antimicrobials, it denotes an alarming risk, therefore in cases of invasive infections in both human and animals there will be reduction of therapeutic options against the pathogen. Keywords: Salmonella spp., gallbladder, cattle, antimicrobials, antibiotic resistance.
Actinic cheilitis (AC) is clinically characterized by atrophy of the vermilion border of the lip. The lip demonstrates a smooth surface and areas of pale spots, with loss of elasticity, and the presence of plaques that can be rough and scaly, in addition to ulcers and fissures. These areas thicken with progression of the condition and may resemble leukoplakia lesions, especially when they extend to the transition zone of the lip. In addition, there may be loss of sharpness between the vermilion border of the lip and skin where chronic ulcers can progress to squamous cell carcinoma (Sarmento et al., 2014;Zanetti et al., 2007). For this reason, it is considered by the World Health Organization as an oral potentially malignant disorder (Barnes et al., 2005).The prevalence of AC has been reported to be between 9.6% and 43.24% (Miranda et al., 2011;Silva et al., 2006). Men, fair-skinned individuals, and those with Fitzpatrick (1988) skin phototype I to III,
