Electron and hole charge and discharge dynamics are studied on plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition grown metal-oxide-silicon germanium nanocrystal flash memory devices. Electron and hole charge and discharge currents are observed to differ significantly and depend on annealing conditions chosen for the formation of nanocrystals. At low annealing temperatures, holes are seen to charge slower but to escape faster than electrons. They discharge slower than electrons when annealing temperatures are raised. The results suggest that discharge currents are dominated by the interface layer acting as a quantum well for holes and by direct tunneling for elec-trons. © 2008 American Institute of Physics
Most techniques measuring corneal biomechanics in vivo are biased by side factors. We demonstrate the ability of optical coherence tomographic (OCT) vibrography to determine corneal material parameters, while reducing current prevalent restrictions of other techniques (such as intraocular pressure (IOP) and thickness dependency). Modal analysis was performed in a finite-element (FE) model to study the oscillation response in isolated thin corneal flaps/eye globes and to analyse the dependency of the frequency response function on: corneal elasticity, viscoelasticity, geometry (thickness and curvature), IOP and density. The model was verified experimentally in flaps from three bovine corneas and in two enucleated porcine eyes using sound excitation (100–110 dB) together with a phase-sensitive OCT to measure the frequency response function (range 50–510 Hz). Simulations showed that corneal vibration in flaps is sensitive to both, geometrical and biomechanical parameters, whereas in whole globes it is primarily sensitive to corneal biomechanical parameters only. Calculations based on the natural frequency shift revealed that flaps of the posterior cornea were 0.8 times less stiff than flaps from the anterior cornea and cross-linked corneas were 1.6 times stiffer than virgin corneas. Sensitivity analysis showed that natural vibration frequencies of whole globes were nearly independent from corneal thickness and IOP within the physiological range. OCT vibrography is a promising non-invasive technique to measure corneal elasticity without biases from corneal thickness and IOP.
Optical properties of multilayer InAs quantum dot waveguides, grown by molecular beam epitaxy, have been studied under applied electric field. Fabry-Perot measurements at 1515 nm on InAs/GaAs quantum dot structures yield a significantly enhanced linear electro-optic efficiency compared to bulk GaAs. Electro-absorption measurements at 1300 nm showed increased absorption with applied field accompanied with red shift of the spectra. Spectral shifts of up to 21% under 18 Volt bias was observed at 1320 nm. Krestnikov, A. R. Kovsh M. Fischer, and J. Purpose: To overcome conflicting methods of local RF heating measurements by proposing a simple technique for predicting in vivo temperature rise by using a gel phantom experiment. Materials and Methods:In vivo temperature measurements are difficult to conduct reproducibly; fluid phantoms introduce convection, and gel phantom lacks perfusion. In the proposed method the local temperature rise is measured in a gel phantom at a timepoint that the phantom temperature would be equal to the perfused body steady-state temperature value. The idea comes from the fact that the steady-state temperature rise in a perfused body is smaller than the steady-state temperature increase in a perfusionless phantom. Therefore, when measuring the temperature on a phantom there will be the timepoint that corresponds to the perfusion time constant of the body part. Results:The proposed method was tested with several phantom and in vivo experiments. Instead, an overall average of 30.8% error can be given as the amount of underestimation with the proposed method. This error is within the variability of in vivo experiments (45%). Conclusion:With the aid of this reliable temperature rise prediction the amount of power delivered by the scanner can be controlled, enabling safe MRI examinations of patients with implants.
Understanding charging mechanisms and charge retention dynamics of nanocrystal (NC) memory devices is important in optimization of device design. Capacitance spectroscopy on PECVD grown germanium NCs embedded in a silicon oxide matrix was performed. Dynamic measurements of discharge dynamics are carried out. Charge decay is modelled by assuming storage of carriers in the ground states of NCs and that the decay is dominated by direct tunnelling. Discharge rates are calculated using the theoretical model for different NC sizes and densities and are compared with experimental data. Experimental results agree well with the proposed model and suggest that charge is indeed stored in the quantized energy levels of the NCs. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
By using integrated optics, it is possible to reduce the size and cost of a bulky optical coherence tomography (OCT) system. One of the OCT components that can be implemented on-chip is the interferometer. In this work, we present the design and characterization of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer consisting of the wavelength-independent splitters and an on-chip reference arm. The Si3N4was chosen as the material platform as it can provide low losses while keeping the device size small. The device was characterized by using a home-built swept source OCT system. A sensitivity value of 83 dB, an axial resolution of 15.2 μm (in air) and a depth range of 2.5 mm (in air) were all obtained.
We propose a new type of self-referencing and multiplexed refractive index (RI) sensor based on a compound optical microresonator structure consisting of Fabry-Pérot (FP) resonators coupled with microring resonators. The transmission spectra shows resonant features that are superimposed on a background defined by FP oscillations. The resonances have asymmetric Fano-like non-Lorentzian shapes, which are used as sensing peaks, while the FP oscillations are used as reference peaks for internal self-referencing. The sensing peaks shift linearly with the increased RI of the cladding in the microring resonator, while FP peaks stay constant. When the temperature is increased, both the FP peaks and the Fano resonances shift linearly at the same rate, which eliminates the temperature effect on RI measurements. We theoretically analyzed that the two-mirror FP resonator coupled with a single microring resonator and optimized its sensing performance through finite-difference time-domain simulations. A sensitivity value of 220 nm/RIU and a maximum figure of merit of 4400 RIU-1 were achieved. We also proposed two possible multiplexing schemes consisting of two-mirror and three-mirror FP resonators coupled with two microring resonators of different radii. The proposed sensor concept is simple, easy-to-fabricate, self-calibrating and can be used for simultaneous measurements of different samples.
