Für die Eisenbahn‐Hochgeschwindigkeitsstrecke im Projektabschnitt „Albaufstieg“ des Großprojekts Stuttgart 21 wird die Filstalbrücke als semiintegrales Bauwerk ausgeführt, bei welchem die Pfeiler ohne Fugen und Lager kraftschlüssig mit dem Überbau gekoppelt werden. Der Entwurf sah flach gegründete Widerlager und kombinierte Pfahl‐Plattengründungen für die Pfeiler in den teilweise karstigen Jurakalken vor. Auf der Grundlage der konsequenten Ausweisung von Tragwerksreserven durch Anwendung hochwertiger numerischer Bemessungsmodelle in Verbindung mit der Durchführung von Pfahlprobebelastungen konnte die Gründung so optimiert werden, dass gegenüber dem ursprünglichen Entwurf ca. 50 % der Pfahlmeter eingespart werden konnten.
Während der Bauausführung wurde im Bereich des Widerlagers komplexer und sehr heterogener Baugrund angetroffen. Als Folge wurde eine Vielzahl an Vergütungsmaßnahmen geplant und ausgeführt.
Aufgrund des hohen Zugverkehrs auf den bestehenden Gleisanlagen der Bahnstrecke Stuttgart-Ulm-Augsburg wird die bestehende Eisenbahninfrastruktur durch den Bau von zwei zusätzlichen Gleisen ausgebaut. Die ca. 60 km lange Neubaustrecke Wendlingen-Ulm ist ein wesentlicher Teilbereich dieser Bahnstrecke und als Bestandteil des Transeuropäischen Verkehrsnetzes nach den Richtlinien der Technischen Spezifikation Interoperabilität (TSI) zu planen. Die NBS Wendlingen-Ulm ist für Güterzüge und Reisezüge im Hochgeschwindigkeitsverkehr mit 250 km/h ausgelegt, wodurch sich die Fahrtzeit zwischen Stuttgart und Ulm im Fernverkehr auf 30 min nahezu halbiert. Ein Großteil der Strecke (ca. 50 %) führt unterirdisch in insgesamt elf Tunnelbauwerken, ansonsten folgt sie auf Geländeniveau in enger Bündelung zur parallel verlaufenden BAB A 8. Hier wurden 37 Eisenbahn-und Straßenbrücken erforderlich, darunter die mit rd. 75 m Höhe dritthöchste Eisenbahnbrücke Deutschlands über das Filstal.
