Öz Dokumacılık, insanlığın varoluşundan günümüze kadar gelen bir süreçtir. Başlangıçta insanoğlunun dış etkenlerden korunması ve örtünme amacıyla yaptığı dokumacılık, giderek bu ihtiyacın ötesine geçip bir sanat haline dönüşmüştür. Ancak el dokumacılığı, batıda meydana gelen sanayileşmeyle birlikte Anadolu'da her alanda olduğu gibi dokumacılıkta da etkisini göstermeye başlamış olup, yaşam biçiminde görülen değişimle birlikte son zamanlarda giderek yok olmaya yüz tutmuştur. Dokumalar, yapıldığı bölgenin iklim şartları, coğrafi şartlar, kullanılan malzeme, yaşam biçimi ve kültürüne bağlı olarak farklılık göstermekte, örneğin sıcak iklimin yaşandığı bir bölgede pamuk, ipek, keten ipliği kullanılırken, soğuk iklimi olan yerlerde yün ve kıl gibi iplikler kullanılmaktadır. Makalemizin konusunu, Doğu Karadeniz bölgesinde yer alan Rize ve Bayburt illerinde yapılan geleneksel dokumalar ile bunların teknik, kullanılan malzeme, motif bakımından benzerlik ve farklılıkları oluşturmaktadır. Rize'de feretiko (Rize bezi) ile Bayburt'ta yapılan ehram dokuma çalışmamızda yer vereceğimiz kumaş türüdür. İki ilimizde yapılan bu dokumalar, birtakım benzerlikleri olmasına rağmen iki farklı tekstil ürününü meydana getirmektedir.
Doğu Anadolu Bölgesi'nde tarihî geçmişiyle önemli bir yere sahip olan Erzurum, içerisinde barındırdığı kültürel varlıkları ile de geleceğini belirlemiştir. Erzurum'da inşa edilen eserleri üç ana grupta değerlendirmekteyiz. İlk grubu Saltuklu dönemi eserleri oluşturmaktadır. İkinci grubu İlhanlı dönemi yapıtları meydana getirir. Üçüncü grubu ise Osmanlı dönemi kültür varlıkları oluşturur. Taşa ve mermere işlenen vakfiyeleri ile Erzurum ayrı bir yere sahiptir. Bu vakfiyelerden ilki 1310 miladi tarihli Yakutiye Medresesi'dir. Yapının güney eyvanına yerleştirilen ve doğu, batı duvarlarındaki ikişer satırlık yazıt, Hoca Yakut'un Medresesi için düzenlettiği vakfının özetidir. Elbette sayfalar dolusu vakfiyelerinin tümünün taşa yazılması mümkün değildir. Vakfiyelerdeki en önemli olumsuzluk, vakfiyenin kaybolmasıdır. Bu durumdan çekinmiş olmalılar ki özetlerinin taşa veya mermere yazdırılması, vakfiyenin âdeta ölümsüzleştirilmesidir. İkinci örneğimiz Osmanlı dönemine ait XVII. yüzyıl eseri olan Caferiye Camii'nin mahfilinde, kuzey duvara yerleştirilen mermer üzerine yazılmış vakfiye özetidir. Günümüze sadece camii ve çeşmesi ile gelebilen külliyenin diğer yapılarının ve vakfedilen vakıf mallarının neler olduklarını belirleme imkânı sağlanabilmektedir. Üçüncü örneğimiz dünyada bir başka örneğini görmediğimiz bir çeşme üzerinde yer alan vakfiye özetidir. XVIII. yüzyıl eseri olan Hacı Mehmed Ağa Çeşmesi üzerinde yine mermere yazılmış on satırlık vakfiye özeti ile Hacı Mehmed Ağanın yaptırdıkları ve bağışladıkları malların özetidir. Taş vakfiye özetleri, yazı tarzları yani hattatları ve taş yontucuları yani hakkâkları açısından da oldukça dikkat çekicidir. Bu üç örnek makalemizde ayrıntılı bir şekilde değerlendirilip irdelenecektir.
