Depuis plusieurs années, le champ de l'intervention socio-éducative s'est profondément modifié. Après les concepts d'aide sociale puis de protection sociale dont les limites ont été constatées avec l'avènement du non-emploi est née la méthode du développement social. Cette approche du « nouveau social » intègre les notions de prévention, de parité, de participation et de partenariat et privilégie le travail en « intériorité ».
Toute intervention a pour visée d'introduire un changement. Or, il n'est pas toujours évident que le terrain accepte celui-ci. Les réactions, mécanismes de défense, et autres résistances sont toujours présentes. Le terrain est actif et réactif. Pour le pénétrer et y travailler, il faut en connaître les caractéristiques et prendre en compte une série de principes fondamentaux. Nous avons structuré le champ de l'intervention selon quatre axes : l'axe systémique, l'axe de l'économie, l'axe de la temporalité et l'axe de l'axiologie. A chacun de ces axes correspondent trois principes de base qui éclairent la pratique de l'intervention, soit au total douze principes qui permettent de mieux appréhender le terrain de l'intervention.
