Healthcare waste management is an essential field for both researchers and practitioners. Although there have been few studies using statistical methods for its evaluation, it has been the subject of several studies in different contexts. Furthermore, the known precarious practices for waste management in developing countries raise questions about its potential barriers. This study aims to investigate the barriers in healthcare waste management and their relevance. For this purpose, this paper analyses waste management practices in two Brazilian hospitals by using case study and the Analytic Hierarchy Process method. The barriers were organized into three categories - human factors, management, and infrastructure, and the main findings suggest that cost and employee awareness were the most significant barriers. These results highlight the main barriers to more sustainable waste management, and provide an empirical basis for multi-criteria evaluation of the literature.
The information on violence against children and adolescents in institutions is limited to varying degrees, resulting in inadequate reporting and referrals to safety nets. This paper therefore aims to develop a care protocol that helps institutions in the Brazilian cities of Uberaba, Minas Gerais, and Bauru, São Paulo, to manage reports of violence against children and adolescents. The research used the Analytic Network Process Method (ANP) to improve the flow of victim referrals, making decisions according to the right violated and the type of violence involved. A survey showed that, from a general point of view, the health sector should be a priority point of referral for victims. In the specific cases of neglect and physical violence, social care and Child Protective Services are the priority sectors, respectively. The health sector is the priority for cases of psychological violence and sexual violence.
Purpose – This paper aims to identify and classify the main barriers for adopting circular economy practices using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method for prioritization. The proposed methodology evaluates the importance of different classes of barriers for adopting circular economy practices in a food company and metalworking company. Theoretical framework – This study was based on the current theory of barriers to adopt circular economy practices and multicriteria decision-making. Design/methodology/approach – The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method was used to assess and prioritize barriers for circular economy practices. Stability was ranked using a sensitivity analysis. Findings – The results indicate significant differences in the classification of barriers. While the food manufacturing company indicate that the main barriers are related to technical information, the metalworking company considered that barriers relating to financial and economic issues have more of an impact. Originality/value – The study contributes to providing insights so that managers have a greater perception of the main difficulties in adopting circular economy practices, in addition, the study also contributes to extending the application of multicriteria decision making methodologies to the circular economy and evaluating the relative importance of the barriers. Keywords - Circular Economy; Analytic Hierarchy Process; multicriteria analysis; barriers; sustainable development.
