A facile surfactant-assisted bottom-up synthetic method to prepare a series of freestanding ultrathin 2D M-TCPP (M = Zn, Cu, Cd or Co, TCPP = tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin) nanosheets with a thickness of sub-10 nm is developed. As a proof-of-concept application, some of them are successfully used as new platforms for DNA detection. The Cu-TCPP nanosheet-based sensor shows excellent fluorescent sensing performance and is used for the simultaneous detection of multiple DNA targets.

Multifunctional nanoplatforms that are safe and have multiple therapeutic functions together with imaging capabilities are highly demanded in the development of new cancer theranostic approaches. A number of near-infrared (NIR)-absorbing inorganic nanomaterials, although having shown great promise not only to photothermally ablate tumors but also to enhance the efficacy of other types of therapies, are not biodegradable and would be retained in the body for a long time. Herein, we develop a multifunctional nanocomposite by coating magnetic iron oxide nanoclusters with a near-infrared light-absorbing polymer polypyrrole (PPy), obtaining Fe3O4@PPy core-shell nanoparticles, which after functionalization with polyethylene glycol could be used for imaging-guided, remotely controlled cancer combination therapy. In this system, the Fe3O4 core, which could be gradually decomposed in physiological environments, is useful for magnetically controlled drug delivery as well as a magnetic resonance imaging contrast. The PPy shell, as an organic polymer, is able to load therapeutic molecules with aromatic structures and also exhibits a strong photothermal effect, which can be used to enhance the chemotherapeutic efficacy, showing an outstanding in vivo synergistic antitumor effect. Our work encourages further exploration of light-absorbing polymer-based nanocomposites for cancer combination therapy under remote physical controls.

Recently, graphene oxide (GO) based nanocomposites have raised significant interests in many different areas, one of which being antibacterial agents where sliver nanoparticle (AgNPs) anchored GO (GO-Ag) has shown promising potential. However, to our best knowledge, factors affecting its antibacterial activity as well as the underlying mechanism remain unclear. In this study, we fabricate GO-Ag nanocomposites with different AgNPs to GO ratios and carefully investigate their antibacterial activities against both the Gram-negative (G-) bacteria Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and the Gram-positive (G+) bacteria Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ). We discover that, compared to AgNPs, GO-Ag nanocomposite with an optimal ratio of AgNPs to GO is much more effective and shows synergistically enhanced, strong antibacterial activities at rather low dose (2.5 μg/mL). The GO-Ag nanocomposite is more toxic to E. coli than that to S. aureus . The antibacterial effects of GO-Ag nanocomposite are further investigated, revealing distinct, species-specific mechanisms. The results demonstrate that GO-Ag nanocomposite functions as a bactericide against the G- E. coli through disrupting bacterial cell wall integrity, whereas it exhibits bacteriostatic effect on the G+ S. aureus by dramatically inhibiting cell division. Our work not only highlights the great promise of using GO-Ag as a highly effective antibacterial agent but also provides more in-depth understandings of the interactions between microorganisms and GO-based nanocomposites.

Unlike polyolefins (e.g., isotactic polypropylene), it is still a great challenge to form rich shish-kebabs in biodegradable poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) because of its short chain length and semirigid chain backbone. In the present work, a modified injection molding technology, named oscillation shear injection molding, was applied to provide an intense shear flow on PLLA melt in mold cavity, in order to promote shear-induced crystallization of PLLA. Additionally, a small amount of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with flexible chains was introduced for improving the crystallization kinetics. Numerous shish-kebabs of PLLA were achieved in injection-molded PLLA for the first time. High-resolution scanning electronic microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering showed a structure feature of shish-kebabs with a diameter of around 0.7 μm and a long period of ~20 nm. The wide-angle X-ray diffraction results showed that shish-kebabs had more ordered crystalline structure of α-form. A significant improvement of the mechanical properties was obtained; the tensile strength and modulus increased to 73.7 and 1888 MPa from the initial values of 64.9 and 1684 MPa, respectively, meanwhile the ductility is not deteriorated. Interestingly, when shish-kebabs form in the PLLA/PEG system, a bamboo-like bionic structure comprising a hard skin layer and a soft core develops in injection-molded specimen. This unique structure leads to a great balance of mechanical properties, including substantial increments of 26, 20, and 112% in the tensile strength, modulus, and impact toughness, compared to the control sample. Further exploration will give a rich fundamental understanding in the shear-induced crystallization and morphology manipulation of PLLA, aiming to achieve superior PLLA products.
