One of the main components of rice husk ash (RHA) is silica, which can be used as raw material for fertilizer. The study examined influences of various volume and concentration on silica extraction. The silica was extracted using a technical alkaline grade solvent (NaOH) with a variation in volume/the ratio of RHA to the amount of solvents (1: 4, 1: 5, and 1: 6) and the solvent concentration (0.50, 0.75 and 1 N). The highest average yield was found in the concentration of 1 N solvent with the ratio of RHA to the number of solvents 1: 6 is 62.83%. Based on the physical characteristics of silica from RHA which include whiteness (93.2496.66%), moisture content (0.49-2.81%), and density (0.56-0.95 g / mL) indicates that the use of technical alkaline solvents tends to decrease the purity of the proven silica also with the presence of major contaminants such as Na and Cl and other elements through SEM-EDX, XRF, and XRD test. In saline soils, the presence of contaminants in silica with an amorphous phase (2θ = 22.29°) especially Na and Cl may have a negative effect if used as raw material for fertilizers.

Rice husk is an abundant and underutilized agricultural by-product in Indonesia. The silica contained in the waste could be used as a substitute natural silica for various purposes. The extraction of silica from rice husk (RH) has been done using the sol-gel method without involving high energy. Extraction was carried out with KOH at concentrations of 7, 10, and 13% for 90, 120, and 150 minutes. Experimental results showed that the highest extraction yield was obtained at the extraction process using KOH 7% (average 9.03%). The minimum concentration of KOH could produce the maximum yield of silica. Characterization by XRD showed that the silica had the same pattern as that of commercial products and it was categorized as amorphous silica indicated with the broad peaks at 2θ = 22°. Amorphous silica with high purity was produced from rice husk by KOH 7 % at 120 min (95.34 %). The process condition resulted in high reactivity and a high BET surface area. The washing process needs to be intensified to improve the purity of silica.

This research aimed to understand response of growth and rice productivity to the utilization of superior rice varieties and the application of biosilica fertilizer on rainfed land at different planting season. The study employed split plot design with three superior varieties of rice as main plot treatment and biosilica application as sub-plot. The growth and rice productivity were observed during dry season and rainy season. The utilization of superior rice varieties was only affected on number of total grains, 1000 grains weight and productivity at dry season meanwhile it affected the variables observed at rainy season. Application of biosilica fertilizer did not affect plant height, number of empty and total grains at dry season meanwhile it affected the variables observed at rainy season. Rice productivities were significantly different in both factors. Result showed that most of variables values obtained with biosilica application were higher. Biosilica fertilizer was able to increase productivity up to 1.08 tons/ha from 6.48 tons/ha to 7.56 tons/ha at dry season and up to 1.92 tons/ha from 8.7 tons/ha to 10.62 ton/ha at rainy season. This result indicated that utilization of superior rice varieties and biosilica fertilizer is recommended to increase rice productivity on rainfed land.

Rice husk is a rich source of biogenic silica nanoparticles (SNPs) having excellent physico-chemical properties and numerous potential applications. Extraction yield of the biogenic SNPs may be influenced by many factors. In this study, morphology and the influence of solvent type (sodium hydroxide/NaOH, potassium hydroxide/KOH) and aging time (0, 6, 12, 18, 24h) on extraction yield and properties of selected biogenic SNPs from Indonesian rice husk were investigated. The biogenic SNPs were produced by a simple sol-gel method. The presence of biogenic SNP aggregates in the rice husk tissues was successfully identified by SEM-EDX micrographs. NaOH produced better SNPs extraction results than KOH. Aging time for 6h was the optimum condition for production of SNPs. The TEM image showed that SNPs from the best treatment were approximately spheroidal with particle sizes in the range of 20–50nm. The XRD patterns revealed the amorphous nature of the SNPs. Nitrogen adsorption–desorption analysis showed that the SNPs had BET surface area of 235,78m2/g, total pore volume of 0.58cc/g, and average pore radius of 4.91nm. The SNPs exhibited a type IV isotherm and H1 hysteresis loop indicating a characteristic of mesoporous materials. The results suggest that the sol-gel method developed could provide a simple and relatively fast extraction technique producing biogenic amorphous mesoporous SNPs that could extend their potential applications and increase the economic benefits of utilizing rice husk.

Diamond shape leaf spot disease caused by Pyricularia zingiberi is an essential disease in red ginger. This current research aims to identify the potency of essential oil formula and silica fertilizer against the diamond shape leaf spot disease. Efficacy of clove oil, lemongrass oil, and mancozeb as a control against the colony growth was tested by inoculating the fungus on PDA medium amended with 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, and 300 ppm of the tested fungicides. Compared to lemongrass oil, clove oil (LC50: 70,79 ppm) is more effective in suppressing the growth of P. zingiberi. In a greenhouse, the leaves of five months old red ginger plants were inoculated by spraying 105 conidia mL−1 suspensions of P. zingiberi. Foliar application of clove oil base pesticide and silica was carried out a month before pathogen inoculation, arranged in the factorial randomized complete design. The disease severity was measured monthly, and the data were analyzed using ANOVA. Disease severity on the plant treated by either clove oil base pesticide or silica was 9,08% and 8,71% lower than control (20,21%). Further research is still needed. Treatment with clove oil base pesticide or silica shows potency in reducing the disease severity.

Rice is a food crop which is grown in Indonesia widely and used as a staple food crop for filling domestic food needs. Rice husk is a solid waste that formed from rice grain milling. Along with the increase in national rice production per year, the rice husk also increase. There is silica content in rice husk have a potency that used as a tanning agent. It can be used as a material substitution of chrome sulfate as conventional tanning agent that have carcinogenic properties. This article will explain about tanning process, the potency of rice husk in Indonesia, rice husk utilization, and silica extraction process also nano-silica processing from rice husk. Besides that, it will describe silica and nano-silica usage in the tanning process, mechanism tanning nano-silica and leather properties that produced from the tanning process with nano-silica.

Salacca edulis Reinw Cv. Pondoh or “Salak Pondoh” is an important exported fruit native to Indonesia. The fruit is highly perishable and hence has a very limited postharvest life for export. This study aimed to investigate effects of activated nano-zeolites application on physico-chemical properties and postharvest life of “Salak Pondoh” during storage. Mordenite and mordenite-clinoptilolite types of nano-zeolites (sized 395-400nm) were prepared by ball-milling method, activated in alkaline conditions, and finally calcinated. Sacheted nano-zelites and bio- disinfected fresh “Salak Pondoh” were packed in perforated LDPE bags, stored at 10±2°C for 25d. Results showed that the fruits packed without nano-zeolites started to show quality damages on their flesh after 15d of storage, although their skin remained intact. Meanwhile, the skin and flesh of fruits packed with activated nano-zeolites remained intact and fresh after 25d of storage. This was confirmed by their physico-chemical properties comparable to those of “Salak Pondoh” for fresh consumption. The presence of activated nano-zeolites (regardless of their types) gave 10-20% lowered RH values that may retard decaying process. These results suggest the potential use of activated nano-zeolites as atmosphere-modifying agents in food packaging for extending the postharvest life of “Salak Pondoh” and other related fresh fruits.
