Synthesis of silica from rice husk by sol-gel method

Abstract: Rice husk is an abundant and underutilized agricultural by-product in Indonesia. The silica contained in the waste could be used as a substitute natural silica for various purposes. The extraction of silica from rice husk (RH) has been done using the sol-gel method without involving high energy. Extraction was carried out with KOH at concentrations of 7, 10, and 13% for 90, 120, and 150 minutes. Experimental results showed that the highest extraction yield was obtained at the extraction process using KOH 7% (a… Show more

“…As a result, a synthesized quartz powder with total metallic impurities of 74.1 ppb was achieved with HCl cleaning for 1 h, indicating that this level of purity can satisfy the requirements of advanced semiconductor processes beyond design rule 3 nm. In particular, a synthesized quartz powder in this experiment showed far superior purity than other amorphous silica particles, as shown in Supplementary Table S1 [ 40 , 41 , 42 , 43 , 44 ].…”

“…Analytical grade NaOH, KOH, and HCl were purchased from PT Merck Chemicals and Life Sciences. Food grade SiO2, also used in our previous study [20] was courtesy of a flour industry. Distilled water was used for all processes.…”

“…The prewashed and dried RH was carbonized and ashed consecutively in a muffle furnace at 200 o C for 1h and then at 500 o C for 3h to produce rice husk ash (RHA). Extraction of biogenic silica from RHA was carried out using the sol-gel method reported previously [10], [15], [18], [20], [22] with some modifications. About 25g of prepared RHA was mixed with 250mL of 5% aqueous NaOH (w/v) or 5% aqueous KOH (w/v) separately.…”
