Trans-4-hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamic acid (ferulic acid, FA) antagonized the effect of exogenous androgens on the ventral prostate (VP) in castrated rats as well as the effect of endogenous androgens in intact rats. FA, however, had no effect on the seminal vesicles (SV) and levator ani muscle (LAM), nor oestrogenic effect in female rats and mice. FA did not antagonize the receptor binding of testosterone nor inhibit the conversion of testosterone into 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
Fucidic acid, of which fucidin is the sodium salt, was isolated from the fermentation broth of the fungus Fucidium coccineum (GODTFREDSEN et al .) [1]. Fucidin is a new antibiotic and mainly active against gram-positive microorganisms and Neisseria [2-5]. The chemical structure of fucidic acid is shown in Figure 1 [6], and related to that of cephalosporin Pi. Consisting of the cyclopentanoperhydrophenanthrene ring system, it is important to determine if fucidin has the measurable effects as a steroid hormone. From such a point of view, there has been published only a report on the human being [7], though it is insufficient. In the present study, the steroid hormonal activities of fucidin have been investigated in the experimental animals.
Twenty pregnant women with marginal periodontitis and 8 pregnant women without periodontitis, aged between 21 and 30 years old, were examined. The stage of periodontitis was classified according to the slight modification of the periodontal index of Russel. Serum protein fractions were separated by electrophoresis on cellulose acetate membrane, using veronal buffer, pH 8.6, ionic strength 0.06, and measured by a densitometer after staining with Ponceau 3R. For the immuno-electrophoretic analysis agar gel plates were used. Buffer solution was veronal buffer, pH 8.6, ionic strength 0.025. Anti-human serum rabbit sera were prepared in our laboratory.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
