A study based on electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) characterization of unsaturated zone around a borehole in fractured rocks was conducted. The experiments were conducted in a tunnel located in 140 m depth in Tono Mine, Gifu, Japan. The experimental site is a 3.4 x 2.2 m 2 end-wall surface of the tunnel, and mainly is weathered granite. The rock is originally in a saturated condition. At the end-wall surface, a total of 134 stainless steel electrodes were installed. Electrical resistances for different electrode combinations were measured, and the ERT was conducted. During the experiments, an approximately horizontal borehole was drilled in the center of the site to observe the effects of the cavity on the water flow system around. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of ERT in characterizing unsaturated zone around cavity in fractured rocks, and revealed that the desaturation process around the borehole not only occurred at the area above the borehole, but also occurred below it. The water flow around the borehole is highly preferential and the unsaturated zone can expand to the area far from the borehole. The results are helpful in developing and calibrating conceptual models for the formation process of unsaturated zone around cavity.
