Estimating reference evapotranspiration with limited meteorological dataAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the estimate of reference evapotranspiration (ETo) for the Southeast Region of Brazil using limited meteorological data. The FAO 56 Penman-Monteith method (PM p ) was used as reference. Three scenarios of limited meteorological data, obtained from automatic network stations, were used for estimating ETo: standard method (PM p ), with solar radiation estimated from the balance between short and wide wavelengths (PM Krs ); standard method using vapor pressure estimated from minimum and maximum temperatures, and from air relative humidity (PM ea ); and standard method using constant wind speed (2 m s -1 ; PM u2 ). ETo was also estimated by the Hargreaves-Samani (HS) and Turc methods. The models were analyzed by statistical indicators of mean absolute deviation (MBE), relative error (RE), root mean square error (RMSE), and Willmott index (d). The PM ea method is the best alternative to estimate ETo, followed by PM u2 , for the states of Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro, and PM Krs , for the states of São Paulo and Minas Gerais. The largest errors are obtained with the Hargreaves-Samani method, which overestimated ETo compared with PM p , for most of the evaluated stations.
Utilizaram-se medidas da radiação solar global e número efetivo de horas de brilho solar da estação Ecologia Agrícola ABSTRACTThe reference evapotranspiration (ETo) is dependent on the amount of energy available in the environment, being solar radiation (SR) as an important variable in its estimation. This study was carried out in order to determine the coefficients "a" and "b" of the Angstron-Prescott equation for Seropédica, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, and to evaluate their effects on the SR and ETo estimation. Measures of global solar radiation and effective number of hours of sunshine were used from station Ecology Fund (83741 -INMET) for the period of 2000 to 2007. The coefficients were determined by linear regression analysis for the entire period and monthly and yearly periods. Using the calculated coefficients and those proposed by FAO (0.25 and 0.50) SR and ETo were estimated and evaluated their performance. The average monthly coefficients "a" ranged from 0.232 to 0.299 and "b" from 0.397 to 0.504. Annual mean coefficients "a" and "b" were 0.295 and 0.417, and for general period were 0.282 and 0.433, respectively. The best performance observed for the estimated SR and ETo was obtained when the monthly coefficients of the equation Angströn-Prescott were adopted.
Despite the massive demand of water for plant irrigation, there are few devices being used in the automation of this process in agriculture. This work evaluates a simple controller to water plants automatically that can be set up with low cost commercial materials, which are large-scale produced. This controller is composed by a ceramic capsule used in common domestic water filters; a plastic tube around 1.5 m long, and a pressostate used in domestic washing machines. The capsule and the pressostate are connected through the tube so that all parts are filled with water. The ceramic capsule is the sensor of the controller and has to be placed into the plant substrate. The pressostate has to be placed below the sensor and the lower it is, the higher is the water tension to start the irrigation, since the lower is the pressostate the higher is the water column above it and, therefore, the higher is the tension inside the ceramic cup to pull up the water column. The controller was evaluated in the control of drip irrigation for small containers filled with commercial organic substrate or soil. Linear regressions explained the relationship between the position of pressostate and the maximum water tension in the commercial substrate (p < 0.0054) and soil (p < 0.0001). Among the positions of the pressostate from 0.30 to 0.90 m below the sensor, the water tension changed from 1 to 8 kPa for commercial substrate and 4 to 13 kPa for the soil. This simple controller can be useful to grow plants, applying water automatically in function of the water tension of the plant substrate. Regressões lineares explicaram a relação entre a posição do pressostato e a tensão máxima no substrato comercial (p < 0,0054) e no solo (p < 0,0001).
The aim of this study was to quantify the water consumption and the crop coefficients (Kc) for the potato (Solanum tuberosum L.), in Seropédica, Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Brazil, under organic management, and to simulate the crop evapotranspiration (ETc) using the Kc obtained in the field and the ones recommended by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The water consumption was obtained through soil water balance, using TDR probes installed at 0.15m and 0.30m deep. At the different stages of development, the Kc was determined by the ratio of ETc and reference evapotranspiration, obtained by Penman-Monteith FAO 56. The crop coefficients obtained were 0.35, 0.45, 1.29 and 0.63. The accumulated ETc obtained in the field was 109.6 mm, while the ETc accumulated from FAO's Kc were 142.2 and 138mm, respectively, considering the classical values and the values adjusted to the local climatic conditions. The simulation of water consumption based on meteorological data of historical series from 1961 to 2007 provided higher value of ETc when compared with the one obtained in the field. From the meteorological data of historical series, it was observed that the use of Kc recommended by FAO may overestimate the amount of irrigation water by 9%, over the same growing season.
