AND WATER RESOURCES IN BAHIA: VALIDATION OF THE HADRM3P PRESENT CLIMATE SIMULATION AND COMPARISON WITH THE A2 AND B2 SCENARIOS FOR 2070-2100Simulations of the present climate were performed in the Hadley Center, UK, for the period with the regional atmospheric model HadRM3P nested in the global model HadAM3 integrated with observed sea surface temperature (SST). The results of this simulation, available at CPTEC/INPE, were investigated over the State of Bahia, Brazil, by comparing them against observed daily data from 29 INMET meteorological stations. The model was able to simulate the main patterns of the seasonal cycle of precipitation, mean 2 m temperature and humidity in the majority of the State of Bahia. However, the magnitude of precipitation along the shore was smaller than observation. Also, the model did not produce any precipitation in the semi-arid and western regions of Bahia during June-July-August. This imposed a more drastic climate scenario than observed. HadRM3P was also integrated nested in the coupled oceanland-atmosphere model HadCM3, with prescribed SST produced by this model, to simulate the IPCC A2 and B2 climate scenarios for the period 2070-2100. These simulations over the State of Bahia showed precipitation decrease and temperature increase with respect to the present climate simulation ov...
The state of Bahia's main climatic characteristic is the high spatial and chronological variability of precipitation. This heterogeneity may be used to determine of pluviometrically homogeneous areas that can define mesoregions in the state, since they allow better management of water resources and help in the elaboration of agricultural studies. The mesoregions already proposed by the scientific community for the state were based only on the annual precipitation in the proximity of the pluviometric stations. In this paper, besides these parameters, spatial and chronological rainfall distribution was considered, i.e., the Precipitation Concentration Degree (PCD) and Precipitation Concentration Period (PCP). The new zoning is based on an update of a study defined in 2000 that divided Bahia into eight mesoregions. Thus, 180 pluviometric stations were distributed throughout the state and grouped conforming to the division previously described. It was concluded that some stations of the same mesoregion had presented conflicting values for the analyzed parameters and, therefore, should not belong to the same area. Starting from an arrangement of the collection stations, considering their proximity, annual precipitation and statistical parameters, a new zoning for Bahia with 10 clusters was defined and validated through the statistical treatment of data. (PCP).
Palavras-chave: evento extremo, área urbana, energia potencial convectiva disponível, Nordeste do Brasil ABSTRACT: WAVELIKE EASTERLY DISTURBANCE AND ITS IMPACTS ON SALVADOR CITY:An extreme rainfall event registered in the city of Salvador, Bahia, is investigated in this work. Observational surface and upper air data, gridpoint data, meteorological satellite images and disasters information provided by the Civil Defense of Salvador (CODESAL) were used in the analysis. During the period from midnight to 3 A.M. on 12 June 2006 51 mm accumulated rainfall was registered. A high number of disasters were registered by CODESAL, particularly landslides. Weak winds throughout the troposphere and maximum convective available potential energy of 3,233 J kg -1 were identified in Salvador on June 11th, fifteen hours before the heavy rainfall. Areas of deep convection characterized this event, favored by a wave that reached the eastern coast of Northeast Brazil after moving westward over the South Atlantic with an estimated phase speed of 10 m s -1 , as seen on the meridional wind component field at the 700 hPa level and on meteorological satellite images.
Due to the importance of generating energy sustainably, with the Sun being a large solar power plant for the Earth, we study the cross-correlations between the main meteorological variables (global solar radiation, air temperature, and relative air humidity) from a global cross-correlation perspective to efficiently capture solar energy. This is done initially between pairs of these variables, with the Detrended Cross-Correlation Coefficient, ρDCCA, and subsequently with the recently developed Multiple Detrended Cross-Correlation Coefficient, . We use the hourly data from three meteorological stations of the Brazilian Institute of Meteorology located in the state of Bahia (Brazil). Initially, with the original data, we set up a color map for each variable to show the time dynamics. After, ρDCCA was calculated, thus obtaining a positive value between the global solar radiation and air temperature, and a negative value between the global solar radiation and air relative humidity, for all time scales. Finally, for the first time, was applied to analyze cross-correlations between three meteorological variables at the same time. On taking the global radiation as the dependent variable, and assuming that (which varies from 0 to 1) is the ideal value for the capture of solar energy, our analysis finds some patterns (differences) involving these meteorological stations with a high intensity of annual solar radiation.
A unique set of C-band meteorological radar echoes is analyzed. The data were obtained in Petrolina (9°24%S, 40°30%W), located in the semi-arid region of Northeast Brazil, from January to June 1985. The characteristics analyzed are echo areas, types and patterns. As in other tropical areas of the world, echoes with an area5 100 km 2 dominated, making up 53% of the total number of echoes while echoes with 100 km 2 Barea5 400 km 2 accounted for 36% and the larger echoes, the remaining 11%. A linear correlation analysis between the parcel convective energy and the number of echoes within different classes of horizontal area resulted in a positive correlation for echoes with areas5400 km 2 only. The largest precipitation areas found in this study were shapeless, extensive, long-lasting stratiform rain areas covering about 35000 km 2. Satellite images and daily maxima surface rainfall rates give evidence that they are associated with mesoscale convective systems formed in the presence of an upper tropospheric high amplitude trough or cyclonic vortex. The echoes were classified following two criteria. The first classification is based on lifetimes and horizontal reflectivity gradients obtained from the Plan Position Indicator (PPI) and Range, Height Indicator (RHI) images, which allowed the identification of convective, stratiform and stratiform with embedded convection echoes, the last one being an intermediary class assigned to intense precipitation cells embedded within stratiform rain areas. The second classification is based on the apparent degree of organization observed on the PPI images, which allowed identification of five distinct patterns: scattered echoes, zone of echoes, line of echoes, strip of echoes and band of echoes. Results show convective echoes to account for 98.78% of the total number of echoes. They occurred throughout the period of study, being more frequent in the southeast quadrant of the radar coverage. A relatively high frequency of stratiform echoes (0.8%) occurred in January only. Scattered echoes and zones of echoes were observed during the entire period of study, being more frequent in March and April. Lines and strips of echoes were more frequent in March and April also. Bands of echoes occurred almost entirely in June. Preliminary analyses based on satellite images, surface maps and Petrolina surface and upper air data enable speculation that a system of frontal origin penetrating the radar area provided the dynamical forcing to form the bands in June. All five distinct patterns were more frequent in the southeast quadrant of the radar coverage. It is hypothesized that this preferential location may be explained, among other factors, by the interaction between the smooth relief and moisture advection by the southeasterly trade winds.
The concern about the climate issue has been increasing since climate change influence the water resources system. For this reason, this study sought to identify the presence of trends in the historic series of two meteorological variables: total annual precipitation and number of rain days, in the state of Bahia, Brazil, in order to verify if the precipitation regime is being affected by the global climate change. Two trend tests were applied: Mann-Kendall and Linear Regression, with significance levels of 5% and 10%, in the historical series of 32pluviometric stations distributed throughout the state. The results of the two testes were similar, which guarantees that both can be used for detection of changes in rain pattern. The study confirms that in a specific region of Bahia, more specifically in the central and eastern areas, there is a reduction trend in the historical series of annual precipitation. Regarding the number of rain days, no trend conclusions were observed.
