Rainfall zoning of Bahia State, Brazil: an update proposal

Abstract: The state of Bahia's main climatic characteristic is the high spatial and chronological variability of precipitation. This heterogeneity may be used to determine of pluviometrically homogeneous areas that can define mesoregions in the state, since they allow better management of water resources and help in the elaboration of agricultural studies. The mesoregions already proposed by the scientific community for the state were based only on the annual precipitation in the proximity of the pluviometric stations. … Show more

“…This happens because the rainfall in this region is influenced by the actions of systems that act both in the west, such as the ITCZ and the High-Level Cyclonic Vortices, and in the east of the state [5,95,96]. The state's western region presented the highest values of this index, suggesting the influence of meteorological systems, when active, favoring the occurrence of rain in a single period of the year [97]. Similar results were found by Araújo (2013) [98] and Silva and Lucio (2015) [99], who, when using the PCP and the PCD to characterize the temporal variability of rainfall in Rio do Grande do Norte, the state of the NEB region, concluded that the eastern region of the state presents a better distribution of rainfall throughout the year.…”

“…Thus, Thornthwaite climate classi cation produced an overestimation of the arid climate in relation to reality. Similarly, according to this classi cation, the climate in the southeastern coast of Bahia fell into the moist subhumid category, but this area is actually known to have a humid climate (Sambuichi & Haridasan, 2007;Simões et al 2017;Mencia et al 2017;Mencia et al al. 2021).…”
