BACKGROUND: Pugun Tanoh (Curanga fel-terrae (Lour.) Merr) is one of the medicinal plants. C. fel-terrae often used by the Karo tribe of Tiga Lingga Village, Kabupaten Dairi, Provinsi Sumatera Utara to treat diarrhea, asthma, cough, scabies, inflammation, bruising, and abdominal pain. Hence, it is necessary to examine the anti-inflammatory effects of Pugun Tanoh leaf extract. AIM: The present study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Pugun Tanoh leaves ethanol extract as an anti-inflammatory in patients after tooth extraction at Dental and Mouth Hospital of Dentistry Faculty, Universitas Sumatera Utara. METHODS: There were two research groups, namely the treatment group, which was given the extract plus amoxicillin 500 mg and mefenamic acid 500 mg as well as the control group who were only given amoxicillin 500 mg and mefenamic acid 500 mg without the extract. However, the instructions given to the patient are only required to take 500 mg of amoxicillin as an antibiotic, but for the 500 mg mefenamic acid drug, it is only instructed to drink it if there is pain that is felt by the patient. After the extracted teeth, the treatment group was given C. fel-terrae leaves ethanol extract 1.1 mg/kg on the tooth extraction socket using a 3 ml syringe then measurements were made on day 1 and day 2 after the extract was given using a visual analog scale (VAS) and through direct observation. Statistical analysis using the t-test independent and Chi-square test (significant p < 0.05). RESULTS: The treatment group did not have signs of inflammation both on the 1st and 2nd days after tooth extraction, while the control group had signs of inflammation both on the 1st day and the 2nd day after tooth extraction. In the treatment group, there were no patients who took the mefenamic acid drug while in the control group, it was found that all patients took mefenamic acid because they felt post-extraction pain. Statistical result are obtained with p = 0.00 (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: C. fel-terrae leaves ethanol extract is effective to be used as an anti-inflammatory in patients after tooth extraction combined with amoxicillin 500 mg and mefenamic acid 500 mg.
Objective: Tooth extraction in oral surgery can lead to bleeding. Ozone water is a material that is able to accelerate healing process and prevent socket inflammation by stimulating and speeding up the work of cells like fibroblasts. Moreover, ozone water quickens the release of oxygen to the tissue to kill microorganism in tooth socket and accelerate healing process. Material and Methods: This is experimental research using post-test only with control group design. Ozone water is made using DSM Aero High Voltage. The ozonation process takes 30 minutes and followed by soaking a tampon in the ozone water. Patients in the treatment group bite the tampon for 30 minutes while patients in the control group bite a dry tampon. After 30 minutes, the tooth socket is checked to observe the inflammation using the Gingival Score Index. Patients are instructed to come back 7 days after the tooth extraction to check on the inflammation. There is a total of 38 samples in the study and they are divided into 2 groups (treatment and control). This study is conducted in the Department of Oral Surgery and Maxillofacial Faculty of Dentistry USU. Results: The average of Gingival Index after 30 minutes is 0.42±0.507 and 0.95±0.911 for treatment and control groups, respectively. On day 7 the average is 0.00±0.00 for treatment group and 0.37±0.496 for control group. Conclusion: Ozone water is able to stimulate and quicken the healing process for wounds and reduce the inflammation of the tooth socket.
Background: Cleft lip and palate is one of the most common congenital abnormalities in infants and is caused by more than one factors, which can be genetic and environmental. Defects in a family gene can result in cleft lip and palate. The study found a high family history relationship with the incidence of cleft lip and palate. Birth order studied by several researchers also has different results, which were influenced by folic acid consumption, maternal knowledge, lack of antenatal care visits and maternal age. To determine the cases of cleft lip and palate based on the birth order of the children and family history of the patients at Mitra Sejati General Hospital. Purpose: The study aimed to investigate cleft lip and cleft palate patients by birth order and family history. Methods: This research was a retrospective descriptive study using survey method. Researchers gave 13 questions through a questionnaire and data were collected and counted manually. Results: The results showed that based on the birth, the cleft case in the first birth order amounted to 25 people, the second 30 people, the third 19 people, and the fourth or more as many as 20 people. Based on family history, 27 patients had a family history of cleft lip and palate, while 67 patients did not have family history. Conclusion: The cases of clefts at Mitra Sejati General Hospital happened more frequently in the second child and most incidence did not have family history.
