Foram inventariadas todas as árvores com DAP > 10 cm em 9 parcelas permanentes de 100 x 100 m (1 ha cada Phytosociology of a dense ombrophilous forest in the northern Amazon, Roraima, Brazil ABSTRACTThis study was carried out to characterize species composition and phytosociology of a native forest located at Caracaraí, Roraima, Brazil. All trees with breast diameter (DBH) above 10 cm in nine 1-ha-permanent plots (100 x 100 m each) were inventoried. We observed 4,724 individuals (525 trees per hectare) distributed in 42 families, 111 genera and 165 species. The families with greater number of individuals were Fabaceae (1883), Lecythidaceae (609) and Sapotaceae (434), comprising 52% of the total. The higher densities of individuals were observed in the pioneer (219 trees ha -1 ), followed by secondary (193 trees ha ). However, species of secondary group had the highest species richness (95), followed by the climax (44) and the pioneer (26). The Shannon diversity index (H' = 3.27) and the value of Pielou equability (J = 0.64) were lower than those obtained in other floristic inventories in the Amazon, because of the high occurrence of Pentaclethra macroloba. The importance values (VI) were higher for Pentaclethra macroloba (52.1), Eschweilera bracteosa (23.7) and Pouteria caimito (8.1). The importance values of these three species alone accounted for 28% of the total VI across species. Most of the individuals (71.3% = 374 trees ha -1 ) were recorded in the middle stratum (12.4 m < height < 26.5 m) of forest. The forest community can be considered well-structured, mature and diverse, and so it is in good state of conservation.
& Context Copaifera species produce an oleoresin of commercial importance that is widely extracted in Amazon communities. & Aims This paper addresses two questions. (1) What are the morphological characteristics of Copaifera species that influence oleoresin production? (2) How do different Copaifera species respond to repeated harvests?

Growth of Teak (Tectona grandis) in a Setentrional Amazon Stand Abstract-This study was carried out aiming to fit a volumetric model and a growth function, as well to compare the growth of teak (Tectona grandis) in a stand located at Iracema (RR) with the growth of teak stands located at different areas in Brazil and Central America. To fit volumetric models 122 sample-trees were used and to fit a growth function to estimate DBH, medium and dominant height, and total volume without bark 18 sampletrees were used. The Chapman-Richards function was used and the data were obtained by stem analysis. The Schumacher-Hall model was selected to estimate total volume with bark of Tectona grandis trees. Chapman-Richards is a suitable function for determination of the growth curves for DBH, medium height, dominant height and total volume without bark. Comparison among dominant height growth curves on different sites indicated that the stand located in Roraima did not present good performance probably due to low soil fertility levels. Index terms: reforestation; volumetric models, Chapman-Richards function.
Crown morphology to evaluate the growing space of four Amazon native speciesAbstract -This work aimed at defining guidelines for thinning of four native species in pure stands, in Roraima State: Brazil nut tree (Bertholletia excelsa), Andiroba (Carapa guianensis), Ipê-roxo (Tabebuia avellanedae), and Jatobá (Hymenea courbaril). Analyses were made on the relations between main crown morphometric index, and diameter and height growth of these species. Eighty-seven trees were measured, and data taken are: diameter at breast height, total height, crown insertion height and crown diameter. Crown parameters analysis showed diameter and crown area superiority of Brazil nut, which indicates its need of a proper initial spacing and bigger growing space. However, Brazil nut crown was less efficient to maintain the same mean annual diameter increment.Index terms: Bertholletia excelsa, Carapa guianensis, Tabebuia avellanedae, Hymenaea courbaril, crown diameter, thinning.
The aim of this study was to investigate variation in mating system among three Brazilian Amazon populations of the tree Bertholletia excelsa with different levels of anthropogenic interventions. We collected open-pollinated seeds from one natural population, remnant trees dispersed in a pasture, and trees from a plantation. Outcrossing rate not varied among the populations and indicates that all seeds were originated from outcrossing (tm=1.0). Mating among relatives was significant higher in the plantation than forest and pasture populations, probably due the fact that many trees are related in the plantation. Correlated mating was significantly higher in pasture (rp=0.47) and plantation (rp=0.51) than in the natural population (rp=0.22), suggesting that trees in natural population are pollinated by a higher number of pollen donors. The paternity correlation was significantly higher within (rp(w)=0.41) than among fruits (rp(a)=0.18), showing a higher probability to find full-sibs within than among fruits. The fixation index was generally lower in seed trees than in their seedlings, suggesting selection for heterozygous individuals from seedling to adult stages. Progeny arrays collected from the natural population had a lower proportion of pairwise full-sibs than in pasture and plantation and higher variance effective size (2.75) than trees in pasture (2.15) and plantations (2.22). Results highlight that seed collections for conservation, breeding and reforestation programs preferentially should be carried out in natural populations due low proportion highest variance effective size within progeny.
