The incidence of lower limb amputation is high across the globe and continues to be a major threat to morbidity and mortality. Consequently, the provision of high quality and effective prosthetics services have been known as an essential component for a successful rehabilitation outcome. In Malaysia, amputation prevalence has been increasing in which several main components of service delivering aspects (such as service intervention, prosthetic personnel) should be anticipated to accommodate for the increasing demand. This article highlights the hurdles experienced in providing prosthetic services in Malaysia from multiple aspects such as financial burden to acquire the prosthesis and lack of expertise to produce quality prosthesis. This paramount issues consequently justify for the urgency to carry out national level survey on the current statistics of lower limb amputation and to ascertain the available workforce to provide a quality prosthetics services. Only with accurate and current information from the national survey, strategies and policies aimed at enhancing the outcome from prosthetics services can be achieved.
Purpose – The paper describes how expert views were elicited in developing a conceptual framework of conserving cultural values of heritage buildings (CVHB) from the facilities management perspective (fm). It proposes the manifestation of fm perspective of people, place, process, and technology as a tool to sustain the physical condition and integrity of a HB and its CV according to fm dimension before a HB is endorsed as a heritage. The linkages between fm and CVHB will help to produce a guideline for conserving CVHB from fm perspective (CVHBfm) at the initial phase of conservation in Malaysia. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – The study opted for an exploratory approach; three expert interviews were conducted from three levels of conservation practitioners drawn from strategic, tactical, and operational levels. A matrix thematic was used to manifest the qualitative variables in mapping the conceptual framework. The respondents will provide views and linkages between eight criteria of CVHB (social, economic, political, historic, aesthetical, scientific, age, and ecological) and fm dimension (people, place, process, and technology) in conserving a HB at the preliminary phase of conservation. The responses from these respondents will provide insights into how fm perspective manifest and epistemological construct with CVHB variables that will be integrated in a case study method for further investigation inquiry. Findings – In this paper, the study indicates an fm perspective of people, place, process, and technology, associates and epistemological constructed with CVHB criteria of social, historic, aesthetical, and scientific in sustaining the physical condition and integrity of CVHB from fm dimension in Malaysia. The respondents from three levels of conservation practitioners (strategic, tactical, and operational) have explained and elaborated briefly the connotation between CVHB and fm in mapping the framework. It also provides insights into how fm dimension manifests with those CVHB variables in conserving a HB before it is endorsed as a heritage at the initial stage of conservation. Originality/value – Moving from this exploratory study, further research will be undertaken. In-depth interviews will be carried out with a rigorous emphasis on fm and eight criteria of CVHB with a greater number of experts on HB conservation from strategic, tactical, and operational levels in Malaysia. Documents suggested during the initial study such as The National Heritage Act 2005 (Malaysia) and UNESCO's outstanding universal values (OUV) will be analysed and framed in mapping the conceptual framework. Further investigation will assist Malaysia in advancing the application of fm perspective to enhance the conservation of HB and its CV by highlighting the role of fm as a robust tool in sustaining the integrity HB in Malaysia.
Burnout among nurses is a significant problem in a nursing home and hurts clinical outcomes. Global research has shown that the prevalence of burnout ranging from 30% to 80%. However, this is an unknown statistic among nurses working at a nursing home in Malaysia. This study aims to determine the prevalence of burnout among nursing staff working in nursing homes, Malaysia. A crosssectional study was conducted from March-September 2019 on a group of nurses (N=150) with a response rate of 85.3% (128/150). The distribution of the Maslach burnout inventory scores among the study group revealed that the majority 51.8% had a high level of emotional exhaustion, 61.3% scored high on depersonalization, and the majority 62.8% had high levels of reduced personal accomplishment. High levels of burnout were found in 60.6% of the nurses, and 10.2 % had moderate burnout levels. Nurses are generally related to intense pressure and high-level exhaustion because of their high demanding, challenging, and stressful job characteristic. The findings of this study expected to help a related organization such as private nursing homes and allied industries in the development of policy to improve the quality of human resources. Further studies are required to determine the prevalence of burnout in the public nursing home and identify factors associated with burnout in nurses.
In the past decade, franchising has become a well-known platform for business expansion. Various strategies have been employed by franchisors in expanding their business into the global market. However, few studies have assessed the determinants that can be adopted by the franchisors in bringing value as well as opening up opportunities for global market expansion. This study aims to explore the determinants of global expansion based on Malaysian franchisors’ experience. A qualitative research approach was adopted through various case studies with ten franchisors from the food and beverage industry in Malaysia. In-depth interviews were carried out to explore this topic. Thematic analysis was performed through the “Atlas.ti” software package version 9.0, which was also used in analyzing the data. The findings indicated that there are four themes, and nine sub-themes were discovered from the grounded data. The franchisors agreed that franchise brand, business location, product, advertising, and promotion were able to influence franchisors in designing strategies for global expansion. The data were also able to provide an in-depth understanding of the determinants for global expansion that can be undertaken as a guide to prospective franchisors who want to start exploring the global market. These results are expected to assist the government as well as the agencies involved with franchising in improving related policies, strategies and programmes. Thus, it is important to understand these determinants in order to survive in a competitive global market.
