Quand les pasteurs Peuls s'installent au Nord-Cameroun à partir du XVI e siècle, la région est déjà occupée par des peuples qui vivent au sein d'entités sociopolitiques, les unes centralisées et les autres segmentaires. Qu'elles soient coiffées par un chef de terre détenteur du pouvoir politique ou par un devin concentrant entre ses mains le pouvoir politique et l'autorité religieuse, ces entités sont des unités sociopolitiques autonomes avec leurs hiérarchies internes, leurs modes de régulation sociale, leurs divinités, leur organisation défensive, bref leur vie spécifique. Parfois vassales du royaume du Mandara, ces unités n'en jouissent pas moins d'une réelle personnalité. Il en est ainsi des Guiziga (Pontié 1973 ; Adama 1999) de la plaine du Diamaré qui, après avoir refoulé les Mofou dans les montagnes, ont imposé leur autorité dans l'espace compris entre Maroua et Moutourwa, cohabitant aussi avec les Zoumaya et les Moundang dans nombre de localités adjacentes. C'est auprès de leurs chefs que les pasteurs peuls en quête de pâturages pour leurs troupeaux obtiennent le droit de s'installer en contrepartie du paiement d'un droit de pacage. Au départ sobres et relativement justes, les chefs guiziga, à l'instar de la plupart des chefs païens d'autres contrées du Nord-Cameroun, versent progressivement dans l'arbitraire. C'est ainsi qu'à une fiscalité toujours plus lourde, s'ajoute l'exercice du jus de primae noctis sur les pucelles peules. Toutes choses qui, en plus du préjudice économique, heurtent le code moral des Peuls (pulaaku) (Bah 1993). En outre, les pasteurs subissent le harcèlement quotidien de leurs hôtes, lesquels pillent leur bétail pour les sacrifices rituels ou tout simplement pour s'en nourrir. Par ailleurs, les différends opposant paysans païens et pasteurs peuls au sujet des déprédations du bétail dans les champs sont quotidiens, dégénèrent régulièrement en affrontements.
Résumé Au-delà du caractère rituel que l’islam confère au pèlerinage, un grand nombre de pèlerins musulmans exercent des activités commerciales qui engendrent des profits substantiels. Les diverses stratégies mises en œuvre tendent toutes à rentabiliser le voyage en Arabie Saoudite. En s’appuyant sur la typologie des pèlerins observée dans le cadre de l’espace public camerounais, cet article passe en revue certaines des initiatives des candidats potentiels à La Mecque, tant à l’époque de la colonisation qu’après l’indépendance, en étudiant leurs inventions respectives en termes de création ou d’adaptation des modalités d’accumulation.
