Extraocular muscle pulleys, now well known to be kinematically significant extraocular structures, have been noted in passing and described in fragments several times over the past two centuries. They were late to be fully appreciated because biomechanical modeling of the orbit was not available to derive their kinematic consequences, and because pulleys are distributed condensations of collagen, elastin and smooth muscle (SM) that are not sharply delineated. Might other mechanically significant distributed extraocular structures still be awaiting description? An imaging approach is useful for describing distributed structures, but does not seem suitable for assessing mechanical properties. However, an image that distinguished types and densities of constituent tissues could give strong hints about mechanical properties. Thus, we have developed methods for producing three dimensional (3D) images of extraocular tissues based on thin histochemically processed slices, which distinguish collagen, elastin, striated muscle and SM. Overall tissue distortions caused by embedding for sectioning, and individual-slice distortions caused by thin sectioning and subsequent histologic processing were corrected by ordered image warping with intrinsic fiducials. We describe an extraocular structure, partly included in Lockwood's ligament, which contains dense elastin and SM bands, and which might refine horizontal eye alignment as a function of vertical gaze, and torsion in down-gaze. This active structure might therefore be a factor in strabismus and a target of therapeutic intervention.
From the methanolic-soluble extract of the wood of Artocarpus heterophyllus, four new flavones, artocarmins A-D (1-4), and three new chalcones, artocarmitins A-C (5-7), have been isolated together with 13 known compounds. Their structures were determined on the basis of the spectroscopic data. Compounds 1-4, 6, 7, 9-16, and 20 displayed significant tyrosinase inhibitory activity. The most active compound, morachalcone A (12) (IC50, 0.013 μM), was 3000 times more active as a tyrosinase inhibitor than a positive control, kojic acid (IC50, 44.6 μM).
The ethanol extract of propolis from the Vietnamese stingless bee Trigona minor possessed potent preferential cytotoxicity against PANC-1 human pancreatic cancer cells in nutrient-deprived medium, with a PC value of 14.0 μg/mL. Chemical investigation of this extract led to the isolation of 15 cycloartane-type triterpenoids, including five new compounds (1-5), and a lanostane-type triterpenoid. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated on the basis of NMR spectroscopic analysis. Among the isolated compounds, 23-hydroxyisomangiferolic acid B (5) and 27-hydroxyisomangiferolic acid (13) exhibited the most potent preferential cytotoxicity against PANC-1 human pancreatic cancer cells under nutrition-deprived conditions, with PC values of 4.3 and 3.7 μM, respectively.
This paper examines the production efficiency of 2079 rice farms in Hanoi (Vietnam) in 2018 and the role of formal and informal knowledge on their efficiency. Our empirical results showed that, in general, Hanoi’s rice farms performed quite well in 2018. The differences in the specific performance of each farm could be explained by the farmer’s characteristics (age, education and gender of the head of household) as well as by certain external factors (support programs or distance to city center). We found that self-learning through experience did not obviously improve the farm’s production efficiency whilst education and training were notably important. We further suggest that regional councils and agricultural support programs played an important role in helping farmers improve their efficiency and sustainability.
Nowadays, linear motions are almost indirectly realized by rotational motors, which cause several inherent weaknesses such as mechanical complication due to intermediate modules, low accuracy and performance because of accumulating errors of all elements in the systems. Using motors able to create directly linear movements is capable of removing the above limitations. This paper presents a control solution for Polysolenoid permanentstimulation linear motors according to the exact linearization that enable physical outputs to follow reference inputs. All of currents are mobilized to make the propulsion force of the linear motors even when there is lack of the model's parameters or under effects of disturbances. The platform of the above control solution depends on the model of objects and the extract linearization. Simulation results plotted by MATLAB-Simulink re-emphasize performance of the proposed control structure.
Human pancreatic cancer cell lines have a remarkable tolerance to nutrition starvation, which enables them to survive under a tumor microenvironment. The search for agents that preferentially inhibit the survival of cancer cells under low nutrient conditions represents a novel antiausterity strategy in anticancer drug discovery. In this investigation, a methanol extract of the rhizomes of Boesenbergia pandurata showed potent preferential cytotoxicity against PANC-1 human pancreatic cancer cells under nutrient-deprived conditions, with a PC value of 6.6 μg/mL. Phytochemical investigation of this extract led to the isolation of 15 compounds, including eight new cyclohexene chalcones (1-8). The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by NMR spectroscopic data analysis. Among the isolated compounds obtained, isopanduratin A1 (14) and nicolaioidesin C (15) exhibited potent preferential cytotoxicity against PANC-1 human pancreatic cancer cells under nutrition-deprived conditions, with PC values of 1.0 and 0.84 μM, respectively.
We report on the process of synthesizing copper nanoparticles (Cu Nps) for a short reactive time by chemical reduction method with a support of CTAB reductive agent. Their properties were determined by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectrum, the X-ray (XRD) analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) images. The antifungal activity of Cu Nps was evaluated by testing againstFusariumsp. The Cu Nps were obtained with the average size in the range of 20–50 nm having spherical shape. The survey shows that when Cu Nps were used at 450 ppm concentration in 9-day incubation, 93.98% of fungal growth was inhibited.
Human pancreatic cancer cell lines such as PANC-1 have an altered metabolism, enabiling them to tolerate and survive under extreme conditions of nutrient starvation. The search for candidates that inhibit their viability during nutrition starvation represents a novel antiausterity strategy in anticancer drug discovery. A methanol extract of the bark of Mangifera indica was found to inhibit the survival of PANC-1 human pancreatic cancer cells preferentially under nutrient-deprived conditions with a PC50 value of 15.5 μg/mL, without apparent toxicity, in normal nutrient-rich conditions. Chemical investigation on this bioactive extract led to the isolation of 19 compounds (1-19), including two new cycloartane-type triterpenes, mangiferolate A (1) and mangiferolate B (2). The structures of 1 and 2 were determined by NMR spectroscopic analysis. Among the isolated compounds, mangiferolate B (2) and isoambolic acid (12) exhibited potent preferential cytotoxicity against PANC-1 human pancreatic cancer cells under the nutrition-deprived condition with PC50 values of 11.0 and 4.8 μM, respectively.
