The artificial neural network (ANN) approach described in this paper for the synthesis of reservoir inflow series differs from the traditional approaches in synthetic hydrology in the sense that it belongs to a class of data-driven approaches as opposed to traditional model driven approaches. Most of the time series modelling procedures fall within the framework of multivariate autoregressive moving average (ARMA) models. Formal statistical modelling procedures suggest a fourstage iterative process, namely, model selection, model order identification, parameter estimation and diagnostic checks. Although a number of statistical tools are already available to follow such a modelling process, it is not an easy task, especially if higher order vector ARMA models are used. This paper investigates the use of artificial neural networks in the field of synthetic inflow generation. The various steps involved in the development of a neural network and a multivariate autoregressive model for synthesis are presented. The application of both types of model for synthesizing monthly inflow records for two reservoir sites is explained. The performance of the neural network is compared with the statistical method of synthetic inflow generation.
Submerged breakwater is a barrier with its crest at or slightly below the still water level. In situations where complete protection from waves is not required, submerged breakwaters offer a potentially economic solution. Submerged breakwaters have been effectively used to protect harbour entrances, to reduce siltation in entrance channels, against beach erosion, and for creation of artifical fishing grounds. However quantitative information available about the hydraulic behaviour of these submerged breakwaters is rather limited. Theoretical analysis of the problem has not proved satisfactory primarily because of the difficulties in quantifying the energy losses that always accompany these wave - structure interactions. Recourse has to be taken to laboratory studies to provide the necessary information regarding the performance characteristics of submerged breakwaters. A comprehensive laboratory investigation to evaluate the performance characteristics of the submerged breakwaters of various types and shapes, permeable and impermeable was undertaken. The results of these investigations are presented in this paper.
Models are proposed to extend the monthly streamflow data at a site where the available historic rainfall and streamflow data are too short for adequate systems study, subject to the condition that there are no gauging sites in the basin or adjacent basins with a longer period of streamflow data. Hence rainfall data of a nearby raingauge station are used. Five regression models, namely, runoff coefficient model, single linear regression, monthly linear regression, monthly linear regression with stochastic description for residuals, and a double regressed model are used. The results show that the monthly linear regression model with stochastic description for the residuals is best suited for the purpose when applied to a case study.
The results of the investigations conducted to study the distributions of wave heights and wave periods of successive waves are presented in this paper. Ocean wave data obtained off the Mangalore Harbour on the west coast of India are utilized for this purpose. The study indicates that the Rayleigh distribution for the wave heights is valid well beyond the narrow band assumption. The theoretical model for the above period distribution proposed by Longuet‐Higgins does not provide a better fit for the observed data than the Rayleigh distribution does for the square of the wave period. Certain characteristics associated with the joint probability distribution proposed by Longuet‐Higgins are not confirmed by the data analyzed.
Laboratory studies were conducted in an attempt to find out a relationship between beach and wave characteristics when equilibrium conditions are reached in beach wave interaction for the simple case of regular waves acting normal to the beach. Experimental results indicate the existence of stable points on beach profiles where the coordinates of the profile do not change with time when waves of constant characteristics act on the beach. Emperical relationship between the wave and beach properties are proposed. A new criterion for classification of beach profiles is indicated.
