2-Substituted benzimidazoles (3) and (4a-c) were prepared via condensation of ethyl 2-thionyl-pyruvate (1) and hydrazidoyl derivatives (2a-c) with o-phenylene diamine in acetic acid. Acetylation of compound (4a) with acetic anhydride yielded the corresponding N-acetyl derivative (5). Treatment of compound 4b with hydrazine hydrate gave the corresponding hydrazino derivative (6). Reaction of 2-[(2-thionyl)acetyl)] benzimidazole (3) with hydrazine hydrate gave the pyrazolyl derivative (7) and hydrazino derivative (8). Alkylation of compound 3 with alkyl halide gave the corresponding 2,3-disubstituled benzimidazoles (9a, b). Pyrrolo[1,2-a] benzimidazole derivatives 10 and 11 were prepared via cyclocondensation of compound 3 with acetic anhydride in presence of AcONa and phosphorus oxychloride. The electron impact mass spectra of both of the above series of compounds have also been recorded and their fragmentation patterns are discussed.

This study analyzed the determinants of supply among plantain farmers in Osun State, Nigeria. A four-stage sampling technique was adopted for this study. The first stage involved a purposive selection of Ife Agricultural zone due to its high plantain production and marketing activities in the area. The second stage involves the random selection of Ife North and Ife South Local Government Areas (LGAs) from the four LGAs that make up the Agricultural zone. The third stage involved the random selection of six) villages from each of the selected local governments making a total of 12 villages. Thereafter, 10 plantain farmers were randomly selected from each of the 12 villages. In all, 120 farmers were used for the study and data were collected using a semi-structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Ordinary Least Square Regression model. The results of the study revealed that 69.2% of the sampled farming household heads were male. The significant factors influencing the decision to supply plantain in the study area were distance to market, current market price, household size, quantity processed and farm size. The current price of plantain, quantity processed and farm size were positively significant suggesting a direct relationship while household size and distance to market were found to be negatively significant suggesting an inverse relationship with supply. It is therefore recommended that farmers should be encouraged to increase the supply of plantain by providing adequate and easy means of processing and disposing their product to curb loss as well as making up a centralised price both at the farm-gate level and at the market.

Oxidative Phenol-Kupplungen, welche durch bestimmte Cytochrom-P450-Enzyme katalysiert werden, spielen in der Biosynthese der Glykopeptid-Antibiotika Vancomycin und Balhimycin eine wichtige Rolle. Für die Biosynthese des gemeinsamen Heptapeptid-Aglykons der beiden Antibiotika werden je ein Molekül (2S,3R)-und (2R,3R)-b-Hydroxytyrosin (Bht), zwei vom Tyrosin abgeleitete (R)-p-Hydroxyphenylglycine (Hpg), ein Polyketidderivat (S)-3,5-Dihydroxyphenylglycin (Dpg), sowie die natürlichen Aminosäuren Leucin und Asparagin bençtigt (Abbildung 1). [1] Auffällige Merkmale des Aglykons sind die Biaryl-(A-B) und Biarylether-Verknüpfungen (C-O-D und D-O-E) , welche die kuppelfçrmige Struktur des Moleküls ausbilden. Desweiteren enthalten zwei der cyclisierten aromatischen Seitenketten Chlor-Substituenten. Molekulargenetische Studien der Balhimycin-Biosynthese haben gezeigt, dass das Heptapeptid-Rückgrat durch nichtribosomale Peptidsynthetasen (NRPS) zusammengebaut wird, wohingegen die Ringschlüsse in der Reihenfolge C-O-D, D-O-E und schließlich A-B durch die P450-Enzyme OxyB, OxyA und OxyC erfolgen. [2] Zwei Chlorierungen werden durch eine einzige Flavin-abhängige Halogenase katalysiert. [3] Die genauen Zeitpunkte der Phenol-Kupplungs-sowie der Chlorierungsschritte während der Biosynthese des Vancomycin/Balhimycin-Rückgrats sind noch nicht vollständig aufgeklärt. Frühere In-vitro-Studien mit Hexapeptid-und Heptapeptid-Modellsubstraten, welche Tyr-Reste an den Positionen 2 und 6 enthalten, haben gezeigt, dass OxyB eine Kupplung zwischen den aromatischen Ringen von Hpg4 und Tyr6 katalysieren kann, wenn das Modellpeptid als C-terminaler Thioester an eine isolierte Peptid-Träger-Protein-Domäne (PCP) aus der Vancomycin-NRPS gebunden ist (Abbildung 1). [4] Um Substrate zu erzeugen, die den zu erwartenden biosynthetischen Intermediaten strukturell noch ähnlicher sind, haben wir uns hier vorgenommen, die Tyr2/Tyr6-Reste in den Modellpeptiden mit Bht und/oder meta-Chlor-b-hydroxytyrosin (Cht) zu ersetzen, in der Erwartung, dass das Vorhandensein von b-Hydroxy-und/oder Chlor-Substituenten die Peptide zu besseren Substraten für OxyB machen kçnnte. Das Gegenteil ist aber der Fall: Wir berichten hier, dass die Einführung von Chlor-Substituenten in einem Hexapeptid-S-PCP die Geschwindigkeit des Ringschlusses durch OxyB drastisch senkt (> 20 mal geringer als beim nichtchlorierten Modellsubstrat), und dass ein Heptapeptid-S-PCP mit einem chlorierten Rest 6 von OxyB nicht mehr als Substrat erkannt und somit nicht in das cyclisierte Produkt umgesetztAbbildung 1. The chemical behavior of 4 toward nucleophilic reagents (such as ammonia, hydroxyl amine, and hydrazine derivatives) is described. The electron impact ionization mass spectra of compounds 4b, 5, and 8a,b show a weak molecular ion peak and a base peak of m/z 278 resulting from a cleavage fragmentation. In contrest compounds 3 and 4a show a base peak of m/z 250 and m/z 74 resulting from fragmentation. Compounds 9 and 10 give a characteristic fragmentation pattern with a very stable fragment of m/z 305. SCHEME 4via the pathway C by losing CH C S to give an ion of m/z 221 which lost COOH to give an ion of m/z 176. Finally, the ion of m/z 278 was broken via pathway D to give an ion of m/z 196 which lost CO or CO 2 . This fragmentation led to m/z 168 and m/z 152, respectively.
