Nachdem es sehon frfiher Metschniko]] und Roux sowie Nei/3er gelungen war, die Syphilis auf Allen zu iibertragen, haben zuerst i~alienische Forscher, Bertarelli und Parodi, Kaninchen erfolgreieh infiziert. Bertarelli verimpfte menschliches syphilitisches Material ins Kaninchenauge und erzeugte eine typische syphilitisehe Keratitis, die er in Passagen wei~erimpfen konnte. Parodi und Tru]]i haben dann zuerst Kaninchen mit menschlichem syphilitisehem Material in die Hoden geimpft und konnten, aUerdings nur in verei~zelten und seltenen Fallen, ebenso wie auch sparer Ho][mann, L6he und Mulzer ein Haften des Syphilisvirus beim Kaninchen beobaehten. Die Hoffnung, in dem Kaninehen ein fiir alle Anforderungen der Forschung geeignetes Versuchstier gefunden zu haben, schien sich also zun~ehst nicht zu erffillen, denn aueh die auf das Auge beschrankte syphilitische Infektion yon Bertarelli entsprach nicht dem Krankheitsbild der mensehlichen Syphilis. Die b~ld darauf in Angriff genommenen grof angelegten und systematischen experimentellen Arbeiten yon Uhlenhuth und Mulzer haben jedoeh gezeigt, daf wir im Kaninchen ein ]i~r die Syphilis ~ufierst emp]dngliches Versuchstier besitzen, das sich viel besser eignet als die teuern, sehwer zu beschaffenden und in der Gefangenschaft schwer zu haltenden A[]en. Es ge]ang ihnen, durch [ortgesetzte Hodenimp[ung das syphilitische Virus dem Kaninchenorganismus so anzupassen undin seiner Virulenz so zu steigern, daft ein Krankheitsbild entstand, welches nicht nur in seiner lokalen Erscheinung, sondern vor allem auch --wie bald festgestellt werden konnte --in der frtihzeitig und haufig erfolgenden allgemeinen Durch-8euchung des ganzen TierkSrpers der menschlichen Syphilis aul~erordentlich ~hnlich war. Erst damit war eine sichere und breite Grundlage gesehaffen fiir die experimentelle Syphilisforschung, die nunmehr mit Aussieht auf Erfolg in Angriff genommen werden konnte. Dies zeigte sich besonders in der dutch Uhlenhuth und seine Mitarbeiter experimentell begri~ndeten Arsentherapie der Syphilis.
