By reviewing the many recent theoretical studies about industrial relations, answers are sought to the following questions. Do industrial relations form an autonomous field of inquiry ? This field's boundaries can be marked out by examining how this discipline has taken shape in the United States and by looking at statistics on the bibliography of industrial relations. What are the key concepts underlying this discipline ? They seem to have to do with conflict and the ways of handling it. Three approaches are distinguished : the systemic one, which, paying little heed to strife, mainly concentrates on the drawing up of rules ; the behaviorist approach which , presupposing conflict , emphasizes the processes that lead to drawing up rules ; and the Marxist one which, centered on the concept of a struggle, attempts to explain the nature of rules and changes in them over time.
