Defining Bilingualism: Theoretical Discussions and Current Approaches AbstractIn our day the number of those who get use of more than one language has been rising rapidly. Linguistic studies built on this subject are conducted within the area represented by the name of "bilingualism". This field consists many interdisciplinary approaches and various conceptual frameworks. The use of many different approaches and criteria by the theoreticians reflects the wide ranging image of "bilingualism". Therefore, the subject of whom will be called as a "bilingual" in principle is frequently discussed within the international literature. The fact that there are many different definitions of "bilingualism" and significant contradictions among them is a fundamental problematic which comes to the forefront in the bilingualism studies. Within the literature, there is a need to reveal the approaches, constituting the theoretical framework of "bilingualism", with their similarities and contradictions, and to clarify the existing complexity. For this purpose, written sources of the theoreticians, such as books and articles, have been examined through the literature review method; the approaches, definitions, measures, and discussions within the international literature on "bilingualism" have been focused; and the concept has been introduced with its fundamental dimensions.
This study aims to reconsider the prevalent strategies used for teaching more than one language in the context of multilingualism and to introduce new approaches in the light of developments in the literature. Thus, the current condition in the interdisciplinary area of language education and related approaches required to be developed will be discussed. The study is a descriptive one and is based on literatute review. Using a traditional literature review, an examination of a complex set of up-to-date studies published by academically reliable and competent specialists has been conducted. Some specialists suggest focusing on multilingualism as an alternative to conventional approaches that emphasize the separation of languages in learning more than one language. This suggestion is a result of a holistic approach based on the research and developments in the field of bilingualism. Accordingly, the integration of new knowledge to the existing cognitive structures of an individual is crucial, as old information is the basis of interpreting new information. Interlingual connections combining different languages and a curriculum presenting course contents in different languages constitute a basic framework of this approach. As a result, using of worldwide bilingual-/multilingual educational practices and disclosing the effectiveness of the multilingual approach to develop programs for teaching of multiple languages in Turkey is suggested.
In the twenty-first century, education does not merely focus on information exchange; additionally, it does so on various abilities and living in harmony. To materialize such acquisition among students, cross-cultural competence is an essential vehicle in a rapidly globalizing world. This calls for integrating comprehensive cross-cultural education as an independent subject into teacher training programs alongside the applied practices that go with it. Against this backdrop, the current study aims to determine the cross-cultural competency capabilities of Turkish language teacher candidates studying at one of the major universities in Turkey. In this article, initially cultural dimensions, scope of culture, and aspects of cross-cultural competency are addressed on a theoretical basis. In addition, learning materials are developed by the candidates, based on the instructions provided by the researcher, and analyzed according to their content of cross-cultural competency. The paper also discusses the cultural background of the candidates and their cross-cultural competency capabilities. The findings show that the participants have major difficulty presenting sufficient information or content in developing their cross-cultural competency. In the end, there are recommendations for enhancing the cross-cultural competency capabilities, while shedding light on the inadequate focus devoted to improving these skills within the training programs.
